history

Monument pump oil field Mönchsrot (2019)

In 1958 two farmers from Rot an der Rot discovered an oil well on their grassland . The actual oil field was 1500 meters deep, roughly where the Ellbach flows into the Rot , between Rot an der Rot and Zell an der Rot . There are layers of rock, so-called building block layers of the Upper Oligocene, as the end of the Lower Sea Molasse . During the wedding, 18 feed pumps and around 35 employees pumped an average of 200 tons of oil per day. The crude oil was pumped through a pipeline into neighboring Tannheim in the Illertal , five kilometers away . From Tannheim station was on the railway line Leutkirch-Memmingen about Memmingen to a refinery of the company Wintershall to Hannover transported.

As with every oil field, the production volumes slowly decreased. As early as 1984, the source, together with the Upper Swabian fields in Pfullendorf and Fronhofen, was considered "not particularly productive". In 1995 the production holes were sealed and operations were stopped. The owners of the land received ten pfennigs annual compensation for the square meter of land from the Wintershall company . Up to 1995, 1,475,538 tons of oil were produced from the oil field.

To commemorate the oil production in Rot an der Rot in 2005 , a restored pump with pictures was set up at the exit of the town on the road to Ochsenhausen , which later joins the L 301 .

Trivia

The total amount of oil produced between 1958 and 1995 was loaded into a total of 29,478 mineral oil tank wagons on the railway . If the tank cars were to be lined up, it would correspond to a distance that would roughly extend from Memmingen to Aschaffenburg am Main , or 433 kilometers .
