Eric Van Meir (born February 28, 1968 in Deurne ) is a former Belgian national football player . He is currently working as an assistant trainer at Lierse SK .

Professional career

Beginnings in Berchem (1985–1991)

Van Meir started his football career in his hometown Antwerp . There he initially played for the KSK Hoboken from the district of the same name . From there he went to local rivals Berchem Sport , where he made his first professional appearances a little later. With the then second division, he rose directly to the first Belgian division , where he first attracted attention beyond the city limits. Nevertheless, the team remained in the league for only one year before they were relegated again as bottom of the table. In the second division he finally played with Berchem for three years, only to have to accept relegation to the third division in 1990 . When there was no direct resurgence, he left the club in 1991.

Sporting Charleroi (1991–1996)

In 1991 he went to Sporting Charleroi in the first division. In Charleroi , Van Meir injured himself quite seriously in the pre-season phase. That injury eventually forced him to watch from the stands for the remainder of the season. So he came to his first assignments at Charleroi at the beginning of the next season, which were mostly relatively short. In the following season he still managed to break through and he was able to establish himself as a regular player. In addition, he reached the Belgian Cup final with the team after victories over Club Bruges and RSC Anderlecht . Charleroi lost this, however, with 0: 2 against Standard Liège . Liège was already qualified for the UEFA Cup as second in the league , but since it was less important than the European Cup Winners' Cup , Liège took part in it and Charleroi was denied participation in the European Cup. In return, Van Meir and his team managed to qualify for the UEFA Cup for the first time in fourth place in the next season . But after Robert Waseige left the club and was replaced by Georges Leekens , the team didn't run together much and so they failed in the first round at Rapid Bucharest and was only thirteenth in the league. Under the new coach Luka Peruzović Van Meir played one more season in Charleroi and then moved to Lierse SK .

Lierse SK (1996-2001)

In 1996 he moved to league competitor Lierse SK . With Lierse he became Belgian champion in his first year under coach Eric Gerets and thus qualified for the Champions League for the first time . The team had no chance in Europe's premier class and was last in the group stage with just one point. In the league, too, the team could not confirm the success from the previous year and only finished seventh in the final table as defending champions. This showed that the team had found it difficult to cope with Gerets' departure. But after the dismissal of the new coach Jos Daerden towards the end of the season, the team played better again and won the Belgian Cup under Daerden's successor Walter Meeuws the following year after a 3-1 win against Standard Liège. In the league, however, Lierse could not build on past successes and was seventh again. In the next two years Lierse finally sank in the middle of the table and was once ninth and once tenth. When Meeuws left Lierse in 2001, Van Meir also left.

Career finale in Liège (2001-2003)

So in 2001 he joined Standard Liège . There he played a good first round under Michel Preud'homme and was fifth in the league. Preud'homme was replaced in the following season by Van Meir's old coach from Charleroi, Robert Waseige. Under his leadership he was rarely used due to injuries and ended his career after a disappointing seventh place.

Belgian national team

Van Meir made his debut in the Belgian national team in October 1993 in a friendly against Gabon . This was followed by further nominations and a year later he even took part in the World Cup in the USA , but was not used and Belgium was eliminated in the second round. After that, it took four years for Belgium to take part in a tournament or a World Cup again because it had missed qualifying for the 1996 European Championship . Van Meir was called up this time in the Belgian squad, but was again without a commitment. Instead, he was increasingly overshadowed by Bertrand Crasson , one of the strongest competitors in his position. In 2000 he took part in a European Championship for the first time, as Belgium was already qualified as host. But even at this tournament he was denied an appearance. Two years later, the 2002 World Cup was his last tournament participation. This time he even made two appearances in the games against hosts Japan and Russia . Shortly thereafter, he ended his career and thus did not make any further appearances in the national team. He scored his only goal in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup against San Marino .
