After training as a businessman and commercial artist, Erich Schumm initially worked in various companies. In 1933 he founded the Schumm company in Stuttgart . Three years later he developed Erich Schumm's fuel in tablet form , or Esbit for short . The small white cubes, which burn reliably, quickly became a sales and export hit that was and is sold in over 70 countries. Primarily, Esbit was used in camping or in toys such as model steam engines.

As a member of the NSDAP , he took over the Loeb textile factory in Stuttgart in 1940 at a lower value from the previous Jewish owner. In May 1943 he was excluded from party membership by the Stuttgart NSDAP district leadership because he had praised a Jewish employee in front of the assembled workforce. In the same year, the Stuttgart company building was destroyed in an air raid, and Erich Schumm moved his company to Murrhardt . He also had forced laborers produce Esbit tablets in the Welzheim protective custody camp. Statements by former prisoners after the war that they had been exploited and mistreated, Schumm replied that he had tried to save the prisoners from deportation.

After the Second World War, Schumm founded the Schumm sugar goods factory in Murrhardt, which manufactured products such as chewing gum and wine gum in the 1950s . The Schumm Plastic plant manufactured plastic products for the home and garden in the 1950s and 1960s. The invention of the fly swatter in 1953 was outstanding .

In the 1960s, the manufacture of towel and soap dispensers for use in public facilities began. After Erich Schumm's death in 1979, the company was taken over by Karl-Friedrich Kleemann (1938–1992). He had been with Schumm since 1968, as managing director since 1969. As the executor of Erich Schumm's will, he felt obliged to continue his life's work. He continued to run the company successfully until his death in 1992. In 1994 the company was taken over by Haniel Textilservices (HTS, now CWS-boco ). Today there is a large laundry for towel rolls and floor mats in Murrhardt.

In 1978, on a trip to the United States , Schumm got to know the concept of audio books and then founded Schumm speaking books, the first German audio book publisher . On audio cassettes aufgesprochene literature was often used by libraries purchased for rental. The publishing house exists today under the name Steinbach speaking books in Schwäbisch Hall .

Schumm founded the old people's club in Murrhardt. The Erich Schumm Stift Foundation, which he founded and has its own retirement home, cares for older citizens in Murrhardt and still exists today. The sponsor is the "Erich Schumm Foundation".

On November 9, 1973 he became an honorary citizen of the city of Murrhardt.
