After his release from the prisoner-of-war camp, he made a living in agriculture from 1946, then as an insurance agent and then with activities for a publishing house in Hanover. From 1945 to 1951, the police headed Bremen , a chief of police . In 1951 the order, criminal and administrative police (city office) were merged. Von Bock und Polach - member of the SPD since the 1950s - succeeded the Chief Police Director Franz Noch (SPD) in May 1951 with the new title of Police President. Despite his membership in the SPD, his administration of office was contested several times from various sides. Around 1954/55 he was a member of the security committee of the federal executive committee of the SPD chaired by Fritz Erler .

In 1960 he had difficulties because of an alleged acceptance of rental cars from Mercedes-Benz. From March 1960 to October 1961 he had to let his official business rest. In 1960 he was acquitted in a bribery trial, but sentenced to a three-year salary cut in disciplinary proceedings .

In 1968, his behavior during the Bremen tram riots from January 15th to 22nd was under criticism and sharp protest. What began as a peaceful school demonstration against an increase in the price of the tram from 60 to 70 pfennigs, escalated into a mass uprising after brutal police violence. On January 17th, 3,000 to 5,000 demonstrators took part in the afternoon hours. The police should vacate Domsheide square and end the occupation of the tram tracks. Bock and Polach gave the motto: "Hit it, hit it, pursue it!" The violence and the unrest escalated. Only after Mayor Annemarie Mevissen (SPD) announced her willingness to compromise in a speech on the Domsheide, days later, the student protest could be settled peacefully and without increasing the fare. The Independent Students Federation (USB) called on 22 January 1968 with the Hermann Rademann unsuccessfully the dismissal of the chief of police.

In a circular, the conservative journalist Joachim Siegerist (CDU) published information from a recording of a confidential telephone conversation with Erich von Bock and Polach and passed it on to the local CDU. The winner was then excluded from the journalists' association. Von Bock and Polach was suspended from duty. By leaving the SPD, he anticipated a party exclusion process. An investigation committee of the Bremen citizenship did not come to a clear result. At the end of 1975, however, he was put into temporary retirement . The civil law proceedings in this context did not come to an end until 1977 when the proceedings were closed. In 1976, Ernst Diekmann took over as police chief .

Bock and Polach's son Hans-Georg von Bock and Polach (* 1942) was a senior public prosecutor , advisor at the judicial press office and, from 1995 to 1997, Bremen State Councilor for the Bremen Interior Senator Ralf Borttscheller (CDU).
