The Erika Simon Foundation was founded in 1993 by the entrepreneur Gerhard Simon (1914–2008) with an original foundation capital of 200,000 DM. The aim of the foundation's work includes safeguarding the cultural heritage in former German eastern regions , but focuses on German art and culture in Silesia . One focus is the preservation of the peace churches there . In addition, the unifying encounter between German and Polish young people - especially to maintain the German language - is worthy of support. In 2014 the foundation was awarded the “Special Prize of the Silesian Culture Prize” by the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior and Sport.

The seat of the foundation is in Rinteln . It works under the patronage of Alfons Nossol , the retired Archbishop of Opole . The foundation board consists of Waltraud Simon (1st chairwoman), the historian Arno Herzig and the university professor Wilhelm Ahrens.
