location

The church stands in Schengen on a small hill (rock plateau). Next to the church is the cemetery. The church is owned by the community of Schengen. A little below the rock, the CR 152 ( Wälstrooss ) leads past the church to Bürmeringen .

history

On November 2, 1618, a chapel in Schengen was named for the first time in a document. In 1807 Schengen became its own parish, previously it belonged to Perl . The previous chapel with only 63 m² was expanded in 1870.

On January 29, 1947, the church was completely destroyed by fire. Thereupon the construction of a new church was decided and on May 8th 1949 the foundation stone for a new church was laid on the place where the old church stood. This was consecrated on November 9, 1950 by Bishop Coadjutor Léon Lommel .

In early July 2018, a fire broke out again in the church. A confessional burned and the organ was damaged.

building

The building of the current church was executed according to the plans of Etienne Galowich .

Outside

The church is oriented from northwest to southeast, with the choir , the sacristy and the attached church tower to the southwest. The main entrance portal is to the northwest towards CR 152 ( Wälstrooss ).

Inside

The altars, the altar cross and the baptismal font were designed by Etienne Galowich and made of marble. Inside the church, the Passion Cross and a bronze body depicting Christ by Colruyt should be mentioned.

The sandstone - Epitaph of Anna Appolonia of Housse († October 7, 1616), daughter of Karl Housse and Maria Breisign, reminiscent of the deceased as a baby child that the legend was already talking to shortly after his birth and desire had expressed to be baptized immediately before dying shortly afterwards.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Schengen Agreement, an icon by the Luxembourg artist C. Zeimes with the patron saints of Europe was placed under the gallery in the niche of the original baptistery . The icon shows (seen from the left):

The Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus is enthroned above the six saints, framed by the twelve stars of Europe .

Next to the staircase to the gallery are carved representations of St. Elisabeth (right) and St. Francis (left), a gift from the former monastery in Schengen (2010). To the right of it is a scene from the Last Supper from the altar of the old Schengen Church.
