The Protestant Church of the Redeemer in the Bad Godesberg district of Bonn was built between 1878 and 1880. It belongs to the Evangelical Redeemer Parish Bad Godesberg in the Bad Godesberg-Voreifel parish of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland . The building is a historical monument.

location

The church is located on the outskirts of the Rüngsdorf district at Rüngsdorfer Straße 43 on an acute-angled property at the intersection of Rüngsdorfer Straße and Friedrichallee .

history

The Protestant community of Godesberg was founded in 1861 as a branch community of Bonn. Their parishioners initially used the Rigal chapel in Godesberg for worship . The former private chapel was soon too small for the rapidly growing Godesberg community and, under Pastor Julius Axenfeld , the decision was made to build a new church in an area that was still undeveloped between the then town of Godesberg and the village of Rüngsdorf. The forward-looking Axenfeld suspected that this area would soon become a residential area. The design for the new church came from Hermann Cuno , and Louis Pampel was responsible for the construction. The church was built from 1878 to 1880; The inauguration took place on July 1, 1880. The fact that the first hundred Protestant families could afford to build and maintain their own church outraged the long-established and not so wealthy Catholics of Bad Godesberg. They called the new church "Speckmöll" (Speckmühle). In 1892 galleries were built into the church building. They were lowered in 1930 and renewed in 1956 and placed on steel supports with concrete beams.

Until 1953 the church was called the New Evangelical Church , from then on it was named Erlöserkirche . A comprehensive renovation of the building took place in 1968, when parts of the interior were replaced. The church interior became more sober and brighter. In November 2016, the clock faces and the clock drive on the church tower were modernized for 15,000 euros by the company Hörz from Biberach.

architecture

The brick church is a two-story hall building . It has a nave and a tower on the west side, which forms the entrance. The apse is designed on three sides towards the outside. The main building is flanked by single-storey sacristy buildings. The side entrance porches were added later.

The outer walls of the building contain decorations in the neo-Romanesque style ; there are similarities with the Rigal chapel, which was previously used by the community. The main portal has a double-leaf oak door with ornate fittings . Above the curved tympanum field with a three-fold Christ monogram in sandstone is a sandstone lintel with the inscription: "Christ is our peace" in a rectangular frame.

The tower ends in a high octagonal tent roof over four gables. The three 1.20 meter high clock faces on the tower point in the direction of the former village of Rüngsdorf, the Godesberg villa district and the Godesberg city center. Originally they were made of zinc sheet, since the renovation in 2016 they have been made of aluminum .

The interior is kept simple in the classical style. The church interior is rectangular and has a flat wooden beam ceiling. It is separated from the raised, semicircular apse with its dome by a triumphal arch .

Furnishing

Inside, the church is plastered in light yellow, gray and white surfaces and structured by flat pilaster strips (in the form of vertical wall strips). The glass windows of the post-war period with earth-colored tones match this. The floor was re-covered with Solnhofen tiles in 1956 . After renovation, the stalls are painted blue. Only the folding seats on the side walls and the gallery stalls are in their original condition. The church has around 500 seats. The organ gallery protrudes into the room.

During the renovation in 1968, the old altar was replaced by a simple marble altar table. The wall cross, the candlesticks, the pulpit and the baptismal font were executed in simple metal structures according to the specifications of the pastor at the time, Michael Hack. The former baptismal font in the shape of a kneeling angel holding the baptismal bowl after Bertel Thorwaldsen was first used as a tomb in the Rüngsdorf cemetery . Another use in the Erlöserkirche is planned.

organ

The church was originally equipped with an instrument made by the organ builder Friedrich Gerhardt (1826–1922) from Merseburg . This organ was replaced by another instrument in 1930, which was used until 1966. In 1969 an organ by Alexander Schuke Potsdam Orgelbau was installed. It has 34 stops on three manuals with pedal (Op. 404). The device was completely overhauled in 2013.
