Erlenhof (Bergisch Gladbach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Erlenhof is a former miners' settlement in the Moitzfeld district of Bergisch Gladbach in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis . It consists of the streets Im Erlenhof and Barbarastraße .

history

The name Erlenhof takes up the same name given to the original cadastre in this area. The defining word Erlen is derived from the Old High German tree name erla and is reminiscent of an earlier alder population .

After the First World War , operations at the Weiß mine expanded . As a result, more and more workers were needed for mining. At first, attempts were made to bring in workers from the near and far, some of whom were housed in makeshift shelters with food. But that was not enough. That is why the Erlenhof workers' estate was created in the early 1920s as an incentive to live here with the family and to work at the Weiß mine.
