Herweg is a district in the Moitzfeld district of Bergisch Gladbach .

history

As a former branch of the Brüderstraße , the path through Herweg is one of the oldest traffic routes from Bergisch Gladbach, which led via Sulsen (= Immekeppel ) to Lindlar . The determinant Her stands in connection with the Old High German heri / here for quantity, army or with the Germanic harja for army. It was therefore a heavily frequented army, travel or trade route. The original cadastre lists the place as Herrweg . The settlement belonged to the Sulsener Hofverband and thus belonged to the Meer monastery and from 1726 to the Steinfeld monastery .

Mining

Herweg was surrounded by several mines that were already being used for mining in the Middle Ages . Immediately in the village was the loading station for the Berzelius mine at the end of the street "Am Weinberg". From here an inclined elevator went down into the Volbach valley to the processing plant , with which the ores extracted were pulled up to be transported away. From there they were taken to the Bensberg-Gladbach zinc hut . The foundations are still visible today. Other pits that miners from Herweg have worked on include the Apple and White Pit .
