history

The first settlement of Ermengerst is documented for the year 1037. Due to the patron saint of the church, John the Baptist , it is assumed that Ermengerst originated as an early baptistery in the early Middle Ages . In 1037 the Ermengerster Castle was named as the seat of a clan of clerical servants . The name Ermengerst probably comes from an Erminger who signed a certificate. In 1288, among others, a knight of Ermengerst conquered the Iberg fortress.

In Ermengerst there is a branch church of St. John the Baptist from the 15th century. The church was renovated by Abbot Rupert von Bodman from 1680 to 1690.

The Eschacher Weiher (neighboring municipality of Buchenberg ) was dammed by water regulation in 1677 . Its drainage led over Ermengerst to the Herrenwieser Weiher . The drive energy available as a result led to an upswing for the place.

According to house statistics from around 1800, the 23 properties in the village of Ermengerst at that time, including 12 farms, one Mühlgut and five Sölden , a total of 557.32 days' work (189.89 hectares ).

In 1909 the railway connection between Kempten (Allgäu) and Isny im Allgäu , the so-called Isny Bähnle , was opened with a stop in Ermengerst. Ermengerst was connected to the public bus route in 1975. The train ran until 1984, after which the embankment became a hiking and cycling path from Kempten to Isny.
