Ernst-Dieter Bernhard

Ernst-Dieter Bernhard (born September 22, 1924 in Stettin ; † June 26, 2017 ) was a German officer ( lieutenant general ). He was head of the Air Force Office in 1975/76 and, most recently, from 1980 to 1984 German military representative in the NATO military committee .

Life

Ernst-Dieter Bernhard's father Friedrich-Gustav Bernhard (1888-1945) was an officer in the Wehrmacht, most recently lieutenant general and commander of the rear army area 532. Ernst-Dieter Bernhard attended the Marienstiftsgymnasium in his hometown of Stettin, which he received during the Second World War in 1942 with the maturity note ( Notabitur ) left. He resigned as an officer cadet in the Air Force one of the Wehrmacht. There he was trained as a fighter pilot and promoted to lieutenant in the 12./Jagdgeschwader 53 in November 1944 . During the war he was awarded the Iron Cross II. Class and acquired the front flight clasp in bronze .

After the war, he initially worked as an import merchant. In 1956 he joined the Bundeswehr with the rank of first lieutenant . He was trained as a jet pilot in Germany and the USA. Afterwards he was a flight instructor at the Luftwaffe 10 weapons school . From 1961 to 1963 he completed general staff training . After a further station he was commander of the flying group of Fighter-Bomber Squadron 42 . From 1967 to 1970 he was a member of the Air Force Command (Fü L). From 1970 to 1971 he was Chief of Staff of the 1st Air Force Division . He was then again in the BMVg and came from 1972 to 1974 as commander of the 3rd Air Force Division. In 1974 he became Chief of Staff in the Command Staff of the Armed Forces (Fü S). From 1975 he was head of the Air Force Office and from 1976 Deputy Commander of the Allied Air Forces Central Europe in Ramstein. From 1980 to 1984 he was the German military representative in the NATO military committee . He was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit.

Bernhard was married and the father of three children. He was a legal knight of the Order of St. John .
