Ernst Robert Curtius Prize
The Ernst Robert Curtius Prize for Essay Writing was a literary prize awarded from 1984 to 2015 . The prize, which honors an essayistic life's work or an outstanding individual work, was endowed with 8,000 euros.
The Ernst-Robert-Curtius-Förder-Preis (since 1986) awarded at the same time and endowed with 4,000 euros was intended to promote younger writers (under 40 years of age).
history
Both prizes wanted to promote and establish the German-language essay, analogous to the Anglo-Saxon and Romance-speaking areas, as an independent literary art form in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In addition to linguistic criteria, the award was based on the ideas of the Romanist Ernst Robert Curtius as well as the criteria of a united Europe and international understanding within and outside the German language borders.
The founder was originally the bookseller and publisher Thomas Grundmann in Bonn ; In 2005 and 2007, the awards were presented by Thalia Holding together with the founder. From 2009 to 2015 the "Universitätsgesellschaft Bonn - Freunde, Förderer, Alumni e. V. “Winner of the award.
The awards were presented annually until 2001 and every two years since 2003 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität by the Bonn city mayor. The jury included public figures, politicians, writers, the head of the city of Bonn, the rector of the university and the donors.
The last award was in 2015. The 2017 award ceremony was canceled. The President of the University Society announced that the funds would be used for the university's anniversary.
