Ernst Emil Schlatter

Ernst Emil Schlatter (born November 27, 1883 in Zurich , † September 13, 1954 in Uttwil ; resident in Büttenhardt ) was a Swiss graphic artist , lithographer , draftsman and painter .

life and work

Ernst Emil Schlatter was the son of the Schaffhausen master locksmith Eduard Schlatter and Albertine, née Jaeper. He grew up as the third oldest with five siblings in Zurich-Unterstrass.

Obeying his parents' wishes, he trained as a lithographer from 1898 to 1902 at the Zurich Polygraphic Institute. After successfully completing his training, Schlatter's parents agreed that he could continue his education at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart . Here he was tutored by Fritz Lang , Hans von Kolb , Rudolf Rochga and Johannes Joseph Vincenz Cissarz .

Schlatter returned to Zurich in 1907 and worked as a freelance graphic artist. As such, he specialized in posters, developing new techniques for the application of color lithography, for which he had a marked talent. As a freelancer he created for the Steindruckerei Wolfensberger of Johann Edwin Wolfensberger and for the graphic Institute Müller & turbidity in Aarau lithographic works.

From 1910 to 1912 Schlatter lived in Munich , where he continued to develop from a graphic artist to a landscape painter . During this time he met Franziska Hermle, whom he married in 1912.

After his return to Zurich, Schlatter became Artistic Director of the Wolfensberger Art Institute. The high quality of his work, especially the city pictures in lithography, brought wide recognition and finally the appointment to the Zurich School of Applied Arts , where he taught lithography and landscape drawing from 1917 to 1920.

From 1920 until his death, Schlatter lived and worked in Uttwil.

Schlatter held the office of President of the Zurich Artists' Association for years. From 1925 he was a member of the international artists' association Lake Constance region " Der Kreis " and from 1925 to 1937 he was on its board. He also worked for many years on the board of Thurgau Homeland Security as an actuary. Schlatter worked as an artistic advisor for the Society for Literature and Music in Romanshorn . In 1953 he designed the new club flag for the men's choir Uttwil, for which he was awarded honorary membership in 1954 .

Schlatter could u. a. exhibit in the Kunstmuseum Olten , Kunsthaus Zürich , Aargauer Kunsthaus , Kunstsalon Wolfsberg and in the State Museum Berlin .

In 1943 a detailed monograph on Ernst Emil Schlatter was published by Morgarten-Verlag in Zurich, written by the founder of Artemis Verlag, Karl Hoenn.
