Ernst Schweinfurth (born March 2, 1818 in Karlsruhe , † October 24, 1877 in Rome ) was a German landscape and genre painter and lithographer.

Encouraged by the history painter and engraver Feodor Iwanowitsch Kalmück and the sculptor Johann Christian Lotsch (1790–1873), Schweinfurth began his apprenticeship in 1832 in Karl Ludwig Frommel's studio , where he learned engraving, etching and drawing.

Schweinfurth initially worked in Karlsruhe, then in Freiburg im Breisgau and later in Munich . In 1871 he became a member of the Munich Art Association . He belonged to the circle of friends of Count Adolf Friedrich von Schack , who acquired two works by Schweinfurth for his collection .

Around 1845 he settled in Baden-Baden . In addition to genre and landscape paintings, he also created portraits.

In 1852 Schweinfurth toured Dalmatia , Montenegro and Albania on behalf of Österreichischer Lloyd , after which he settled in Rome, where he stayed for life. He often went on study trips through Italy. Several depictions of Italian costumes and scenes from popular life were published as lithographs and etchings by the Roman publishing house Spithöver.

He was elected chairman of the German Artists' Association in Rome.

On behalf of the Baron von Uexküll , Schweinfurth created large murals for his Fickel Castle in Estonia , which he brought to the destination himself in 1876. On this occasion he also visited Sweden and Norway and also made a detour to Saint Petersburg .

The well-known Africa explorer Georg Schweinfurth was his cousin.
