Ernst Wolfgang Orth

Ernst Wolfgang Orth (born August 9, 1936 in Bonn ) is a German philosopher and professor of philosophy at the University of Trier .

Live and act

After studying German , history , philosophy and psychology at the universities of Mainz and Freiburg i. Br . Orth received his doctorate in Mainz in 1965 with a dissertation on the philosophy of language by Edmund Husserl and Richard Hönigswald . From 1962 to 1970 he was a research assistant at the University of Mainz, and since 1970 he has been Professor of Philosophy at the University of Trier . There he was chairman of the assembly of the University of Trier from 1975 to 1979 and from 1981 to 1983 and from 1987 to 1989 Dean of Faculty I.

Orth was visiting professor at Penn State University, USA (1983), the University of Ottawa (Canada, 1985), the University of Milan (Italy, 1989), the University of Graz (Austria, 1995) and at the Neesima Lectures at Dōshisha University (Kyoto, Japan, 1998). Teaching assignments on philosophy of culture and technology 1991/92 at the University of Weimar.

Ernst Wolfgang Orth's areas of research are: Neo-Kantianism (in particular Ernst Cassirer , Richard Hönigswald and Heinrich Rickert ), phenomenology ( Edmund Husserl , Martin Heidegger , Max Scheler ), history and systematics of philosophical anthropology (including Hermann Lotze , Helmuth Plessner , Arnold Gehlen ), Development of the humanities and cultural philosophy ( Wilhelm Dilthey , Georg Simmel ), philosophy of language , conceptual history , media philosophy , French philosophy , history of the philosophy of the 19th and 20th centuries .

Orth was the founder and head of the Philosophical Research Institute for Media and Culture at the University of Trier and is on the advisory board of the Humboldt Study Center at the University of Ulm . He is on the scientific advisory boards of the German Society for Phenomenological Research and the Max Scheler Society, of which Orth was president from 2007 to 2009. From 1978 to 1983 he was Vice President and from 1983 to 1987 President of the German Society for Phenomenological Research, from 1981 to 1988 managing director of the General Society for Philosophy in Germany , from 1992 to 2000 chief reviewer of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for philosophy and of 1995 to 2000 chairman of the committee of experts.
