The Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation is a foundation under civil law based in Munich , which is dedicated to the promotion of the visual arts. It was founded in 1983 by Ernst von Siemens .

Benefactor

The founder, Ernst von Siemens, was the youngest grandson of the company's founder, Werner von Siemens .

In addition to the Art Foundation, he established two other foundations, the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Foundation for the Promotion of Science (1958) and the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation for the Promotion of Music Maintenance and Music Research (1972).

Foundation capital and staff

When it was established, Ernst von Siemens provided the foundation with capital from his private assets. In addition, there were continuous donations both from his assets and with capital from Siemens AG . In his will, Ernst von Siemens left a further part of his fortune and his private art collection to the foundation. The total amount of funding from the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation amounts to several million euros. Depending on the number of applications, there are 130 to 160 grants per year.

Siemens AG also steps in with donations if the foundation itself cannot do so in individual cases.

Heribald Närger (1923–2015) supported Ernst von Siemens during the establishment and development of the art foundation . He was chairman of the board of trustees and finally honorary chairman of the art foundation. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees is Dirk Syndram , and the general secretary has been the art historian Martin Hoernes since October 2014 .

Purpose and methods

According to the statutes, the purpose of the foundation is to promote the visual arts, primarily through the purchase of works of art or financial support for public art collections in the acquisition of art objects. In addition, the restoration of works of art is financially supported. Music and contemporary art are excluded from funding.

It is seen as an advantage to be able to obtain pre-financing for purchases at short notice in order to be more flexible on the art market. The purchasing institution receives an interest-free loan. With every funding, the foundation acquires joint ownership of the objects. Many funding measures are implemented jointly with other foundations.

Art in stock

The foundation was part of the Kunst auf Lager initiative , an alliance of fourteen private and public sponsors. Their common goal was to develop and secure collection objects that are not in an exhibition but in magazines or depots. The initiative encouraged museum teams to submit corresponding funding applications to the alliance partners.

The Kunst auf Lager initiative ended successfully in November 2018 after five years of collaboration. The Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation has funded a total of 44 extensive restoration projects and contributed to the printing or online posting of over 40 inventory catalogs.
