Schwerin savings institution
The Schwerin savings institution building in Schwerin , Schelfstadt district , Puschkinstraße 2/4, corner Lindenstraße 1 on the square with the Schelfkirche , is a monument in Schwerin .
history
The Schelfstadt, originally the Schelfe , since 1349 also Neustadt , developed from the 11th century as an initially independent place and from 1705 as a city. It originated in the early 18th century on the shelves half-timbered houses and palaces of noble families and the Schelfkirche.
In 1821 the first financial institute was founded in Schwerin, the savings institution as an association with a privilege of the Grand Duchy ; Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I signed the first statute . The judicial councilor Wilhelm von Schack took the initiative . It served the purpose of giving the less well-off the opportunity to "use their savings advantageously". This became the Sparkasse Mecklenburg-Schwerin . The cash register was housed in the building of the Hofmarschallamt ( Schlossstrasse ), but it soon became too small. From 1835 to 1857 the institution resided in the old town hall .
The two-storey representative building from 1857 was built on what was then Königstrasse (from 1945 Puschkinstrasse ) according to plans by the architect Theodor Krüger and was extended to the south in 1890 by Georg Daniel . The richly plastered neo-Gothic facade received six life-size sculptures by Heinrich Petters based on models by Georg Wiese as allegorical figures. They represent the virtues of benevolence, diligence and thrift and were made as cement casts ; a relatively new procedure at the time. The seventh allegory of erudition at the west side entrance was created by Ludwig Brunow in 1901 . A striking, higher ornate cornice is structured by the square half-columns and is reminiscent of a new, romantic Tudor style , with the corner formation being very distinctive. The house was thoroughly renovated after 1990.
In the vestibule there is, in addition to two conventional reliefs, a relief that was later alienated in caricature style and which is suspected to be an allusion to the need for cleaning: a female figure with Richard Wagner's head .
Today (2020) there is a branch of the Sparkasse Mecklenburg-Schwerin in the building with the preserved cash desk and the old grandfather clock as well as the historic vault cellar with reinforced walls. The Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are based here and the Menuhin hall with a wooden cassette ceiling is used for events.
Krüger also designed the Paulskirche in Schwerin and renovated many buildings a. a. Churches in Dömitz , Goldberg , Plate , Plau , Röbel / Müritz and Satow .
