The First Kappel War was a conflict between Reformed and Catholic places in Switzerland. It began in 1529, but ended without any actual fighting with a reconciliation meal, the " Kappeler Milchsuppe " near the town of Kappel am Albis .

Occasion and course

The starting point in the age of the Reformation was the rift between the old and new believers in the confederation .

The Zurich reformer Huldrych Zwingli allied himself in 1529 with the Protestant Constance to create Christian castle law . This alliance, under the leadership of Zurich, was directed primarily against Austria and secondarily against the Catholic inner cities of Lucerne , Uri , Schwyz , Unterwalden and Zug . As a countermeasure, the five inner towns founded the Christian Association with Austria in 1529 . At the center of the religious dispute were the prince abbey of St. Gallen and the common rulers, especially Thurgau . Zwingli wanted to pull the ground off the opposing alliance with a military blow and was looking for a reason for war. In May 1528 the people of Zurich had a Catholic soldier executed in Thurgau, and a year later the people of Schwyz burned the Reformed pastor Jakob Kaiser .

At first, in June 1529 tried Zurich and Bern the inauguration of a Unterwaldner bailiff in the outside offices to avoid. On June 6th, the people of Zurich occupied the bridgeheads Bremgarten and Mellingen as well as parts of the Thurgau and the St. Gallen landscape. They marched with the main force at Kappel am Albis ; Bernese troops followed them. The neutral locations began to mediate on June 7th. However, on June 9, Zurich declared war on the five Old Believers.

The mediation under the Glarner Landammann Hans Aebli prevented a bloody argument. The first land peace in Kappel was concluded without a fight . It was agreed that each congregation could adopt the old or new faith by majority vote ( parity ). The peace was sealed by a reconciliation meal, the Kappeler milk soup.

However, the conflict broke out again in 1531 with the Second Kappel War .
