The private school named after the Jesuit Father Rupert Mayer is divided into a grammar school, secondary school, elementary school and day-care center and is located in the buildings of the former Jesuit Berchmanskolleg . The schools are run by the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising

history

The founding years of the Berchmanskolleg (1923–1932)

After the repeal of the Jesuit Law in 1917 and the return of the Jesuits to Germany, in view of the lack of space in the Ignatius College in Valkenburg, it was decided in 1922 to build a study house in the Munich district. The project was named Berchmanskolleg (named after the Flemish scholastic Jan Berchmans ). In 1923 the property on Wolfratshauser Strasse was acquired. After the drilling of a 30 meter deep well shaft was successful, the architects Georg Giunin and Richard Müller were commissioned to plan the building. After the laying of the foundation stone on August 24, 1924 and a construction period of around two years, the main building was officially inaugurated by Cardinal Faulhaber on January 31, 1926 . In 1932 the Berchmanskolleg was recognized as a philosophical faculty.

The time of persecution and war (1933–1945)

From 1935 the college was under increased surveillance by the Gestapo due to a secret instruction. This increased the pressure of persecution on the Jesuits, especially on Father Lothar König , Father Alfred Delp and Father Rupert Mayer . In 1939 the Berchmanskolleg was confiscated and expanded to become an auxiliary hospital. On September 6th and 7th, 1943, a devastating attack by the British Air Force on the college took place, which completely destroyed the roof and parts of the main building. The reconstruction was completed by Christmas 1943, but most of the study operations were relocated.

From Berchmanskolleg to the Catholic family organization KFW (1945–1971)

After the end of the war, the college resumed regular operations. In 1948 Marga Müller founded the “Katholisches Familienwerk” (KFW) association and in 1950 opened a kindergarten in Schwabing. An elementary school (1953), a secondary school and a grammar school (both 1962) were later founded. In 1969 the Katholische Familienwerk acquired the Berchmanskolleg with the help of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. After the majority of the Jesuits living in Pullach had moved, the kindergarten and elementary school were relocated to Pullach in 1971, followed by the grammar school and the secondary school. In the following years, both the Gymnasium (1973) and the Realschule (1974) received state recognition.

The Catholic family business in Pullach

In 1976, a large fire caused by arson destroyed three quarters of the attic and thus a large part of the secondary school day care center, which was then painstakingly restored. The grammar school got its current name in 1978. In 1993 the KFW dissolved and the archdiocese of Munich and Freising took over the sponsorship of the schools.

Day home schools of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising (from 1994)

From 2001, work began on increasing the school's capacity by expanding the elementary school and the secondary school. For this purpose, new buildings were erected in the south of the school grounds in order to be able to move part of the elementary school there. In 2004 the so-called Jesuit wing in the west wing of the main building was renovated. A new library, an art hall, several music halls, teachers' rooms and a large auditorium with around 300 seats were built there for 7.5 million euros on 14,000 m².

In 2013, the grammar school submitted an application to the Ministry of Culture to be allowed to set up a scientific and technological branch. The establishment took place in the school year 2014/15.

In March 2014, the Archbishop's Ordinariate published plans for the construction of a new crib, kindergarten and elementary school. The planned buildings are being built south of the gymnasium, which was built in 1997, on the southern part of the school. For the new building, the former primary school buildings had to give way. Construction began in spring 2015 and is expected to be ready for occupancy in October 2017. After completion of the construction, only the Realschule and the Gymnasium will remain in the main building.

Description and location

Ground plan of the day care center in Pullach
church

The approximately thirteen hectare school grounds of the Archbishop's Day Home Schools Pullach are located on the western edge of the municipality of Pullach in the Isar Valley in the southern district of Munich . About 300 meters of air line north of the school is that, for the Munich district of Solln belonging monastery of St. Gabriel . In the east, the school is conveniently adjacent to Wolfratshauser Strasse or B 11 . In the west, the school grounds are seamlessly connected to Forstenrieder Park . In the northwest of the school grounds (on the so-called forest meadow) there are also two soccer fields.

The Pater-Rupert-Mayer-Straße coming from the east, from the direction of the Pullach train station , also bears the name of the school patron.

building

The main building was originally planned as a U-shaped wing, but due to lack of funds, only the southern wing was built. It consists of a three-storey two-wing complex with mansard hipped roofs, dormers and plaster structures in a reduced neo-baroque style. The 112 m long main wing is divided in the middle by a tower projection, which at the same time marks the main entrance to the building. The center of today's building is the neo-Romanesque school church from 1926.

South of the main building is a triple gymnasium, built in 1997, which is used by both the school and Pullach clubs. Another, small gym is located north of the church.

Part of the primary school operations have been moved out of the main building due to a lack of space and take place in the former farm buildings of the Berchmanskolleg on the southern area. These buildings will be replaced by a new building from 2017.

Transport links

A special feature of the day care schools is the situation that the majority of the students come from the city of Munich and thus have a long journey to get there. In order to enable the students to have a safe journey to school and home, the school association relies on a comprehensive school bus system with currently 13 'lines' (as of May 2017), which serve many parts of Munich, but also the surrounding area . The school can also be reached via the Pullach S-Bahn station and an approx. Ten-minute walk. Individual bicycle traffic plays a further role in the journey, as the school is connected to the Pullach bicycle network via an underpass on the B 11 . The school has large bicycle parking spaces so that students from the surrounding area, for example from Solln , Pullach or Baierbrunn , can choose this type of journey. Individual motorized traffic is only possible to a limited extent early in the morning and in the afternoon due to the cramped situation in front of the school building. Therefore, the school tries to enable the students to travel by bus or suburban train, for example by including a free MVV ticket for the journey from home to school in the school fees.
