The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Athens ( Latin Archidioecesis Atheniensis ) is in Greece situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Athens . The Archbishop is also the Apostolic Administrator for the Archdiocese of Rhodes .

history

Athens is a very old bishopric . Its origins go back to the Crusades . In 1205 a Latin archbishopric was founded, but it was abolished in 1483, after which it was a titular bishopric .

Anton Prokesch von Osten became President of the Church Administration Council of Catholics in Athens in November 1835 and in 1839 the construction of a church in an exposed location in Piraeus began. Although construction of the cathedral had already begun in 1853, the archbishopric was not re-established until July 23, 1875.

The cathedral is dedicated to St. Dionysius Areopagita . The patron saint of the diocese is Paul of Tarsus . There are Catholic churches outside Athens and Piraeus in Patras , Nafplio and Aspra Spitia .

The Archdiocese of Athens is directly subordinate to the Holy See , so it is exempt . It has no suffragan bishoprics .

The archbishopric includes the regions of Attica , Peloponnese , western and central Greece .
