The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Moscow ( Latin Archidioecesis Moscoviensis Matris Dei , Russian Архиепархия Матери Божией Archijeparchija Materi Boschijei ) is in Russia located Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church .
history
On April 13, 1991, Pope John Paul II established the Apostolic Administration for European Russia with the Apostolic Constitution Providi quae . After it had given up 1,350,000 km² on November 23, 1999 for the establishment of the Apostolic Administration for Southern Europe, the name was changed to the Apostolic Administration for Northern Europe. With the Apostolic Constitution Russia intra fines of February 11, 2002, John Paul II raised the administration to the Metropolitan Archdiocese, to which three suffragan dioceses are assigned. The first archbishop was Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz .
The Russian Orthodox Church has sharply criticized and tried to prevent the establishment of a proper Catholic hierarchy in Russia. At times she was able to fall back on state aid. The authorities refused Archbishop Kondrusiewicz a new residence permit and thus kept him away from his diocese. Only diplomatic interventions by western states and the Council of Europe , which reminded the government that religious freedom is a constitutionally protected basic right in Russia , led to a clarification in the interests of the Catholic Church.
To this day, however, Russian Orthodoxy has found it difficult to come to terms with the Catholic Archdiocese in Moscow. She sees in this the endeavor of Rome to “woo” Orthodox Christians for Catholicism .
On September 21, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. Paolo Pezzi FSCB to succeed Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, who was transferred to Minsk-Mahiljou as Archbishop .
