The Erzebach is a stream west of Obergeis , a district of the Neuenstein municipality in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in northern Hesse . It is an orographically right tributary of the Geis . It is also referred to as Ertzebach on historical maps . The brook got its name because of the iron ore mining operated above its source in the Middle Ages and the smelting that was driven by its water power.

course

Its source is located in the natural subunit Eastern Knüllvorland (No. 356.1) of the main Knüll unit (No. 356), in the cut between the Holnsteinkopf (also Holsteinkopf; about 580 m) in the northeast and the Toad Tip (581.2 m) in the southwest . The stream initially curves slightly to the left to the southwest and then to the northwest and after about 600 meters takes on an approximately 1 km long stream coming down from the south slope of the Holnsteinkopf, which rises not far above the Holnstein desert and the ruins of the Holstein chapel.

Then the Erzebach flows steadily to the northeast with only slight meanders in a scenic valley between the Aubelsberg (440.2 m) in the north and the Obersten Liesburg (up to 554.8 m) and the Kalten Sand (398.3 m) in the South. After about 1.5 km it passes the site of a former ironworks mentioned for the first time in 1483 (left, ) and about 200 further east the small hamlet “Hof Erzebach” (right, ).

After a further 1.7 km, the stream west of Obergeis passes under the Erzebach viaduct (308 m total span) of the ICE line Hanover-Würzburg , which has just emerged from the Kalter-Sand tunnel in the south and runs 23 m above the valley floor then northwards over the Geisbach valley bridge into the Mühlbach tunnel disappears, and immediately afterwards the federal motorway 7 about 800 m south of the Hersfeld-West junction. About 600 m further east, the brook also crosses under the federal highway 324 north of Obergeis and then flows into the Geis from the right (west).

traffic

The Erzebacher Straße runs from Obergeis over the A7 and the north portal of the Kalter-Sand-Tunnel into the valley of the Erzebach and accompanies it on its south side to the farm group Erzebach.
