Obergeis is a district of the Neuenstein community in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in eastern Hesse .

geography

Obergeis is located in Geistal on the B 324 about 10 km from Bad Hersfeld . The Erzebach farm is located within the district marking , about 2.5 kilometers southwest of the town center in the valley of the river of the same name .

history

In 1142 Obergeis was first mentioned when the Hersfeld Ministerial "Dietrich von Geisaha" was mentioned. The village itself is first mentioned as "villula Geisa" and as early as 1259 it was named "superior Geissa". The place became the official and court seat of the Geis Office, to which Obergeis , Untergeis , Gittersdorf, Aua and Biedebach belonged. In the Middle Ages, Obergeis belonged to the clerical principality of Hersfeld . In 1367 the abbot owned the " Bede uz der Geisa", and in 1394 a Hersfeld bailiff "Ynn der Geysa" was mentioned here. In 1590 there were border disputes with the Lords of Wallenstein and in 1673 with the Barons Riedesel . The office, and thus also Obergeis, came to Hesse in 1648.

The chapel in Geis was handed over in 1194 by the abbot of the Hersfeld monastery to the Hersfeld daughter monastery Aua (later Blankenheim monastery). The current Protestant parish church with a late Gothic east tower (fish bubble tracery ) refers to the 15th century. The baptismal font dates from the 16th century.

The Thirty Years' War was devastating for the village: in 1610 there were 160 households, in 1639 there were only 25.

During the time of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia (1807-1813), Obergeis was the capital of the canton of Obergeis and the seat of the justice of the peace .

On August 1, 1972 Obergeis was incorporated into the community of Neuenstein as part of the regional reform in Hesse by state law .

The Obergeis Office

In 1610 both Geis (= Upper and Lower Geis), Gittersdorf, Biedebach, Aua and Etzebach (= Erzebach ) belonged to the Obergeis office . According to Landau, half of Allmershausen also belonged to it. According to the Hessian town and village register of 1747, Ellingshausen was also an office at that time. From the beginning of the 18th century until 1775 Neuenstein Castle was the seat of the bailiff, then Hersfeld.

Mayor

The head of the village is Heinrich Hemel.

Previous mayors were (chronologically): August Spill, Dieter Häckel, Karl-Heinrich Hemel and Stefan Schmidt.

Regular events

Traditionally, on the second weekend in July, the fountain festival of the Heimat- und Trachtenverein takes place on Brunnenplatz with its picturesque half-timbered facades. A specialty is the “Ewergeeser Dückfett with Pellkardüffeln”.

On the last weekend in October, the Obergeiser fair for fair boys and girls has started for over 100 years.
