The Geisbach , often simply called Geis , is a 22-kilometer-long left tributary of the Fulda in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in Hesse ( Germany ). The Geis is a second order watercourse .

geography

The small river arises just outside the village of Salzberg in the community of Neuenstein in the Knüllgebirge . Several springs converge south of Salzberg and come down from the slopes of the Teufelskanzel (575 m above sea level), the Eisenberg (635 m above sea level) and the Donnerkaute in between.

The Geis flows through the Neuensteiner districts of Salzberg, Raboldshausen , Saasen , Aua and Obergeis , whereby the Geis initially runs in a north-easterly direction and then, flowing around the Holnsteinkopf (approx. 580 m above sea level), swings in a south-easterly direction. Between Saasen and Aua it passes under the federal motorway 7 . Between Aua and Obergeis, the Geisbach valley bridge of the high-speed line Hanover – Würzburg spans the river and the federal motorway. Then it takes up the Erzebach coming from the west above Obergeis and flows on through the Neuensteiner districts Obergeis, Untergeis and Gittersdorf .

This is followed by the Hersfeld district of Allmershausen and after about three kilometers the Geis reaches the city center of Bad Hersfeld, where it flows around the old town to the north and east. At the end of the Schilde Park , which was redesigned from 2011 , the Geis continues underground further east of the city until it flows into the Fulda in the south after about 700 m.

The Haune also flows into the Fulda only about 200 meters downstream .

history

The old Lauf Geis flowed through the old town (lower town) of Bad Hersfeld, but the Geis also fed the city moat. After this was filled in around 1800, a parallel run was created around the old town. This run was called Fly Geis. At the beginning of the 20th century, the old course of the Geis in the old town was filled in.

Use of hydropower

In the old town of Bad Hersfeld, where the old course of the Geis was, there were mills for a long time. With the increasing handicraft of the cloth makers , from the 15th century, more and more fulling mills were built on the Geis. In 1895 there were fourteen mills in Geistal as far as Untergeis, six of which were in the city.

It was only with the advent of the cloth factories, around 1850, and the subsequent introduction of steam-powered fulling machines, that the water mills were no longer needed. Today none of the former mills has a mill wheel. Many former mills became normal houses, some of which are used for gastronomy today. Two of the former mills now have a turbine for electricity generation in operation instead of the mill wheel.

The hydropower of the Geisbach caused considerable damage in the valley several times. The most violent floods occurred in 1876, 1956, 1981 and 1996.
