Untergeis is a district of the Neuenstein community in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in eastern Hesse . The town center is located in the Geisbach valley, on both sides of the Geisbach , which flows into the Fulda after about eight kilometers near Bad Hersfeld .

history

Untergeis was mentioned for the first time in 1259 as "Inferior Geissa". Before the Thirty Years War the place had 53 households, in 1639 there were only 13 households.

On December 31, 1971, Untergeis was incorporated into the new community of Neuenstein.

Buildings

Untergeis has a largely untouched, closed, half-timbered townscape from the 18th and 19th centuries. The center is the church drubbel on the right bank of the Geis, from which the old town center extends mainly to the north and east.

  • The Protestant church stands on a hill in the village, the Lindenrain. It is an east-facing hall building from 1806. It has a central north portal and a western portal where the year of construction has also been carved. Above this entrance there is a slate canopy roof turret. The churchyard is partially walled. The church was renovated in the 1990s, and the church organ from 1817 by the organ builder Johann Wilhelm Schmerbach the Middle was also restored. Since 2001 there has been a second bell in the roof turret after the church had to give up one of two existing bells in each of the two world wars.
  • Untergeis has two bakeries . The bakery "Im Graben 1", at the entrance to the church, is a small one-storey plastered half-timbered house from the 19th century with a broken stone sock and a gable roof. Both bakery houses are well preserved due to renovation work and are still used regularly for baking sourdough bread and ploatz , a regional specialty.

traffic

On the left side of the Geis, the B 324 runs through the village. Local public transport is provided by RKH Bus GmbH on line 370.
