Esteban Vigo Benítez (born January 17, 1955 in Vélez-Málaga ), or Esteban for short , is a former Spanish football player and current football coach .

Career as a football player

society

Esteban Vigo began his career at CD Málaga and was a regular for the club from Andalusia when it rose to the Primera División in the 1975/76 season . When Málaga relegated again at the end of the 1976/77 season, Esteban was signed by FC Barcelona . For the next ten years he played exclusively for the Blaugrana . Despite regular appearances, he was never able to assert himself as an undisputed regular player with the Catalans and only made more than 20 league games in the 1980/81 season . With a Spanish championship, three cup and two league cup victories as well as two titles in the European Cup Winners' Cup , his time in Barcelona was marked by great successes. For the season 1987/88 Esteban returned to the second division CD Málaga and helped this again to rise. He then played with Málaga two years of first division football and after relegation in the 1989/90 season another year in the Segunda División before ending his career.

National team

Esteban Vigo took part in the 1976 Olympic Games with the selection of Spain . During his time at FC Barcelona, he played three friendlies for the Spanish national team . His debut took place on September 23, 1981 in a 0-0 draw against Austria . His second and third international matches were played in October and November of the same year.

Career as a football coach

In the 1995/96 season , Esteban took over the relegation-threatened club UD Almería on the third last matchday . Two draws and one defeat were enough to keep them up. From 2001 he coached FC Barcelona C, the third team of FC Barcelona, for two years . In the 2003/04 season he was signed by the second division team Deportivo Xerez before the twelfth match day . The club then improved by nine places in the table by the end of the season and finished ninth. For the season 2004/05 Esteban left the club and hired at league rivals FC Córdoba . However, since he only scored one point in the first seven games, he was released early. In 2006 Esteban briefly coached Romanian first division club Dinamo Bucharest . On the 22nd matchday of the 2006/07 season he took over the third division club UE Lleida . After mixed results, he was given a leave of absence after ten match days.

On the 25th day of the second division season 2007/08 he returned to the table penultimate Deportivo Xerez . Of the 18 remaining games, Xerez lost only three games under Esteban and thus confidently secured relegation in the end. The upward trend continued in the 2008/09 season, so that Xerez rose as champions of the league at the end of the season for the first time in the club's history in the Primera División . Esteban decided to remain in the Segunda División and took over Hércules Alicante . Also with Hércules, he then rose in the 2009/10 season as second in the Primera División. He made his first division debut as a coach in the 2010/11 season . After 29 match days, he was released. Hércules rose as the table penultimate again in the Segunda División. In April 2012, Esteban was the coach of the second division UD Almería , but missed the promotion play-offs sought with the club. In 2012/13 he returned to Deportivo Xerez. In February 2013 he was given leave of absence after 26 match days. At this point, Xerez was bottom of the table.
