The Estrel on Sonnenallee in the Berlin district of Neukölln is Germany 's largest hotel with 1125 rooms and a turnover of 77.5 million euros in 2019 . It is classified in the DEHOGA category 4+. At the same time it is Europe's largest hotel, congress and entertainment center. Around 550 permanent employees are employed. The Estrel does not belong to any hotel chain , but is privately owned by the building contractor Ekkehard Streletzki , who received the industry award "Hotelier of the Year 2000" for the Estrel project. The name of the hotel goes back to the abbreviation of the owner's name.
location
The hotel is located southeast of the city center in the Neukölln district on the edge of a commercial area in the immediate vicinity of the Sonnenallee S-Bahn station . It has its own jetty on the Neukölln shipping canal on the Sun Bridge for boat tours with the Stern and Kreisschiffahrt .
history
The Estrel was partially opened on October 14, 1994, and the official inauguration took place on May 4, 1995. In 1997 the Estrel Show Theater , a converted factory hall, was added to the hotel. The Stars in Concert shows, produced by Bernhard Kurz , with doubles from world stars such as Michael Jackson , Tina Turner and others, take place there every day (except Mondays and Tuesdays) and were attended by more than 5.5 million guests by 2019. In 1999, the building complex was expanded to include the Estrel Convention Center , which hosts around 1,800 events a year, including major sporting events (for example boxing championships), important trade fairs (such as the World Money Fair ) and political events. The Convention Hall can accommodate up to 5,000 visitors. The newly opened Convention Hall II , which was completed in 2015, has an event room for 5,200 people, another event room for 900 people and four conference rooms for up to 100 people. In total, the ECC (Estrel Congress Center) comprises over 25,000 m² of space for congresses, meetings, trade fairs and events and can accommodate up to 12,000 visitors. In spring 2019, the expansion of the event capacities of the ECC by 3,500 m² began. The Estrel Auditorium will be built right next to the Convention Hall II, which opened in 2015, and should be completed in January 2021. In addition to the Estrel Auditorium & Meeting Center, a 4,750 m² industrial hall is also being converted for events (completion: 2020). The event space of the ECC will then amount to a total of 33,250 m² from January 2021.
In March 2009, trainees from Estrel took over the hotel and restaurant operations in Schloss Britz . The apprentices act on their own responsibility and are supported by an Estrel manager and a cook.
The complex will be expanded with a hotel tower that is due to open in 2024/2025. The Estrel Tower (after opening: Estrel Congress Center [ECC]) on the neighboring property - the parking lot on the opposite side of Sonnenallee - is to reach a height of 176 meters with 50 floors and around 800 hotel rooms. This building will be the tallest building in Berlin and the tallest hotel in Germany. The winning design by the Berlin architects Barkow Leibinger was confirmed on February 25, 2014. The architects envisage a slender tower with a glass-metal facade and each room will have a loggia , with an open-air terrace with a bar at the top.
During the European Maccabi Games in 2015, the hotel accommodated all around 2300 participating athletes.
Awards
In 2015 the Estrel Congress Center (ECC) received the Location Award in the category “Event locations for large events”. The award honors event locations with a visitor capacity of 1,000 people or more - including large event rooms, exhibition halls, arenas or stadiums.
Furthermore, the Estrel Berlin was awarded the Chefs Trophy training in 2015. The award recognizes companies that are committed to training budding chefs far beyond the normal level and thus arouse enthusiasm for the cooking profession.
In 1996 the Estrel Berlin was included in the "Guinness Book of Records" as the largest hotel in Germany. In 2016 it replaced the Bayerischer Hof in Munich as the top-selling hotel in Germany.
