Etel Adnan (born February 24, 1925 in Beirut ) is a Lebanese writer and painter.

Life

Etel Adnan is the daughter of a Greek and a Syrian who was an officer in the Ottoman army in Smyrna and grew up in an Arabic-speaking environment with Greek and Turkish mother tongues. In the then French-controlled Lebanon , she attended the French Catholic girls' school, and her first literary language was French. Later she also wrote in the English language. In the linguistic conflict, she found another form of expression in abstract painting.

Adnan left school at sixteen and worked as an assistant in the French army . Her office manager was Jean Gaulmier , who made it possible for her to take the baccalaureate on the side . In 1945 she began studying literature with Gabriel Bounoure at the newly founded “École Supérieure des Lettres de Beyrouth”, where Georges Schehadé was also active, worked as a teacher and then went to Paris in 1949 to study at the Sorbonne , where she received her first degree in philosophy. She continued her studies in 1955 at the University of California, Berkeley and Harvard University and then taught humanities and philosophy at the Dominican University of California in San Rafael . She was invited to other American colleges as a guest lecturer.

After seventeen years she returned to Lebanon in 1972 to work as a feature editor for the French-language newspapers Al Safa and L'Orient-Le Jour , but had to leave the country again because of the civil war in 1976. She went to Paris, where she published her anti-war novel Sitt Marie Rose in 1978 , in which she took up the fate of her friend who was murdered by the Kata'ib . From France she went back to California , where she settled in Sausalito . In the early 1980s she was involved in the libretto of Robert Wilson's opera The CIVIL warS . She then wrote a number of plays. The piece Sometime in the Night had its German premiere in 2013 at the Karlsruhe State Theater .
