The Ettenbach is a river in the Ortenaukreis in Baden-Württemberg . Together with its main right upper course, it is an over eighteen kilometers long right tributary of the Elz and a third order body of water. It then drains further over the Rhine into the North Sea .
geography
course
The Ettenbach is created near Ettenheimmünster by the confluence of the right Dörlinbachergrundbach and the left Münstergraben . The brook flows through the towns of Münchweier in a fairly constant west-north-westerly direction , after crossing from the Black Forest into the Upper Rhine Plain of Ettenheim , the village Grafenhausen passes a little to the south, then leaves the independent community of Rust on the left and then flows out on the southern edge of the village Kappel of the municipality of Kappel-Grafenhausen in the Elz.
In order to protect Kappel from flooding of the Ettenbach, a relief channel was created in the past, which branches off to the left from the Elz after the Ettenbach estuary and flows back into the Elz north of Kappel .
Catchment area
The catchment area is 60.0 km² and is located with its eastern part, in natural spatial terms, in the Central Black Forest sub-area of the Black Forest , with the western part in the Lahr-Emmendinger foothills of the Offenburg Rhine Plain, which belongs to the Upper Rhine Plain . The greatest heights are in the area of the eastern watershed, the highest point at the summit of 535.9 m above sea level. NHN reach Haubühls .
In turn, the catchment areas of the following neighboring waters are adjacent:
- in the east lies the area of origin of the Schutter moving to the Kinzig ;
- then in the south the Bleichbach leads the drain on the other side above to the Ettenbach receiving water Elz ;
- whose immediate catchment area borders in the west;
- whose subsequent right tributary Kapuzinerbach drains the area in the north of the catchment area border up to the first Black Forest heights and also takes up the branch (Grafenhausener) Dorfgraben of the Ettenbach;
- on the northeastern part the Sulzbach competes for a short stretch , a little longer and then back to the Haubühl the Litschentalbach , two left Schutter tributaries.

Other communities and places in the catchment area
In addition to the municipalities mentioned, whose areas are traversed or touched by the water, also have a share in the catchment area:
- on the eastern watershed the community of Schuttertal with small uninhabited forest spandrels;
- to the south the small town of Herbolzheim with small, uninhabited forest exklave spandrels in the east and larger areas further to the west in the lowlands, including the settlement area of the city itself;
- Between Herbolzheim and the Ettenbachlauf in the north lies the main area of the community Ringsheim, which clearly predominantly drains towards the Ettenbach, the entire settlement area of the village;
- On the northern watershed, the small town of Mahlberg has a small corridor near the lower reaches of the river and on the ascent to the Black Forest a little larger one in the forest.
Former history
The course of the Ettenbach was changed considerably by human hands in the Middle Ages. Originally the Ettenbach turned north between Altdorf and Orschweier , took up the Altdorfer Dorfgraben and the Darsbach from the Riedgraben and then drained via Unditz and Schutter to the Kinzig instead of the Elz today. As drainage for Elz was then channeled back to the capuchin Bach in Mahlberg, whereby the area between the reed mats and Kaiserwald significantly meliorated , allowing the creation of the village Grafenhausen and it was developed for agriculture surrounding hall.
Economical meaning
In the southern Ortenau, the Ettenbach used to drive at least three mills in Ettenheimmünster together with its upper reaches and at least four mills in Ettenheim. It drains the Rittmattenwiesen on the lower reaches .
