The EU bird sanctuary Westlicher Müggelspree is a European bird sanctuary ( SPA area ) in the Berlin district of Müggelheim in the Treptow-Köpenick district in the extreme southeast of the city. The English-language name of the area is SPA Müggelspree , whereby SPA stands for Special Protection Area (German: 'special protection area'). The name is derived from the name Müggelspree for the Spree in the area of the protected area.
The protected area is an important breeding area and passage area for migratory birds in the Spreetal lowlands with extensive use of grassland , valley sand islands with dune ridges, silted bog channels in pine forests , flowing waters and the river lake of the Spree with floating leaves and underwater plants as well as remains of alluvial forest .

The bird sanctuary includes the areas Die Bänke north of the confluence of the Müggelspree in the Großer Müggelsee , the nature reserve Krumme Lake / Pelzlake south of the Müggelspree, the nature reserve Gosener Wiesen and Seddinsee as well as the Schmöckwitzer Wiesen and the Schmöckwitzer Bruch between the Dämeritzsee in the north and the Seddinsee in the South, which are connected by the Gosen Canal . The Gosener Landstrasse crosses the protected area in an east-west direction and leads at the end of the area into the village of Gosen in the municipality of Gosen-Neu Zittau in Brandenburg .
The area lies between the two green main Berlin routes, Spreeweg with number 1 and Dahmeweg with number 9.
Protection assignment
The bird sanctuary was designated as a special protection area in November 1997. In February 2006, the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development approved the area in accordance with the guidelines 92/43 / EEC of the European Council of March 21, 1992 for the conservation of natural habitats and wild animals and plants (Habitats Directive) and the Birds Directive 2009/147 / EC (SPA) established as a European bird sanctuary. The area of the Natura 2000 protection network of the European Union covers a total of eight square kilometers. At the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation it is listed with the number 3548-341 and in the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) with the number 555537448.
