The European Symposium Kaisersteinbruch is a Europe-wide sculpture symposium that is held in Kaisersteinbruch .

The “European Symposia” for sculptors were founded by the Museum and Culture Association Kaisersteinbruch in 1998, continued until 2007 and continued in 2019 with Belgium.

prehistory

As part of the 400th anniversary celebration in 1990, the Kaisersteinbruch Museum and Culture Association organized a symposium for stone carving to revive the Kaiserstein . The Austrian Christoph E. Exler was the founder and organizer . He was able to win the Hungarian Ferenc Gyurcsek and the Romanian Alexandru Ciutureanu to work together. Three monumental stone sculptures were created. With this, Kaisersteinbruch wanted to prepare for the 1995 Vienna-Budapest World Exhibition , which was canceled after a referendum in Vienna and Budapest in 1991. The symposium then changed its objectives. Until 1997, the sculptors took part in the removal of the structural damage to the site caused by the Second World War, which had not yet been completely repaired .

European symposium

In 1998, master stonemason Fritz Opferkuh was commissioned with a plan for the completion of the well in the center of the village. The fountain was named Europabrunnen in honor of the Austrian presidency in the European Union .

At the annual symposia, sculptures by artists from 27 European countries were attached to the old stone wall, which stretches from the Europe Fountain to the former rectory. In order to achieve a certain uniformity, the works had to be made as square panels of a certain size. This was the only requirement for the sculptors. Participation was independent of EU membership - belonging to Europe was the sole criterion. The rose garden , which was laid out in 2001, embellished the "Europe Wall", which was also known as the "Wall of Unity".

The organization took place from 2002 together with the pan-European movement Austria . Numerous well-known personalities such as Otto von Habsburg , Erhard Busek , Günther Nenning , the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Moldova Andrei Stratan , Wander Bertoni , Štefan Holčík (Vice Mayor of Bratislava ) and Klara Köttner-Benigni were invited to the symposium celebrations . The Paneuropean President emphasized the peculiarity of the symposium in Kaisersteinbruch, as countries without EU membership such as Romania and Croatia were also represented on the “Wall of Unity”. Nenning emphasized that Europe can only acquire identity through the complexity of the individual nations and remarked, "Just as the Berlin Wall was once a symbol of the division of Europe, this wall should be a symbol of European unity."

For the presentation, the national flags were placed over each stone relief of the 27 countries. As a symbol of the bond between the individual countries, Ferenc Gyurcsek designed the rivers of Europe from blue-green stone.

Artist (selection)

  • Marek Moderau: The Polish artist presented the theme of the oldest Polish document relating to the formation of the Polish state.
  • Georg Miks: In the planning phase of this symposium - namely to invite a sculptor from “Austria” - it was not foreseeable that the European states would impose sanctions on Austria for political reasons . This fact impressed the young artist Georg Miks from Breitenfurt . On closer inspection of his work, a swastika could be seen (hidden).
  • Hugo Marxer: The Liechtenstein sculptor designed the relief "Principality of Liechtenstein".
  • Andrey Grabrovec : The Slovenian sculptor is also known by the pseudonym Gaberi and was visited by Furch in Maribor in January 2001 and showed some of his monumental works in the city.
  • Stefan Lyutakov: Together with Benedikt von Nursia , the Cyril and Method shown here were the patrons of Europe.
  • Adam Williamson: Adam Williamson, as a multi-award-winning sculptor, for example made a plaque for the Queen Mother from the slate of the country plate " United Kingdom " on behalf of the Prince of Wales .
  • Robert Rocca: The sculptor Robert Rocca's theme on Europe: "Unification".
  • Florijan Mićković: Kaisersteinbruch was almost completely destroyed after the end of the Second World War . Pictures from this period hang in the museum. This is what it looks like in Mostar now , the sculptor from Bosnia-Herzegovina ( Mostar ) realized when he unveiled his stone tablet. Even if the country was not yet a member of the European Community, it was intended to set a symbolic sign that this country was part of Europe.
  • Andrej Tyrtyshnikov: In 2007, after several years of effort, we received confirmation that Russia would participate in the project. The Moscow sculptor Andrej Tyrtyshnikov brought with him a stone and bronze slab which, based on a manuscript, represented highlights in Russian history . A solemn religious act took place at the cemetery under the direction of Archimandrite Georgi, Abbot of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Vienna .
