Eva is a French - Belgian feature film directed by Benoît Jacquot from 2018 . The psychological thriller, with Isabelle Huppert and Gaspard Ulliel in the lead roles, is based on a novel by James Hadley Chase . The film premiered on February 17, 2018 in the competition at the 68th Berlinale .

Bertrand witnesses how an aged writer dies in his bathtub. The young man then took possession of the dead man's last manuscript and published it under his own name. The play was a great success and Bertrand was celebrated by critics as a literary prodigy. While he was trying to write another piece, he met the noble prostitute Eva during a snow storm. Bertrand is fascinated by the mysterious, older woman. She brings him inspiration for his work, and conversations with her soon become dialogues in his new piece. Eva herself only sees him as an arrogant snob, whom she doesn't trust and whose bondage she takes advantage of. Over time, Bertrand developed a deep obsession for her that eventually led him to his own death.

The film is based on the 1945 novel Eve (English title: Eva , 1946) by the British writer James Hadley Chase. The book was made into a film by Joseph Losey in 1962 under the title Eva with Jeanne Moreau and Stanley Baker in the leading roles. A remake of the material with Isabelle Huppert and Gaspard Ulliel was officially announced in early December 2016, which should be a free and modern adaptation. Director Benoît Jacquot said he had read Chase's book as a teenager, which was published in France in the series Série noire . At the time he was seriously considering a career as a filmmaker. Therefore, for Jacquot, the book is in a way connected with the desire to make films. For Isabelle Huppert and him Eva was the sixth collaboration in a film after Die Flügel der Taube (1981), Schule des Desire (1998), Nur kein Scandal! (1999), La fausse suivante (2000) and Villa Amalia (2009).
Filming was scheduled for mid-January 2017 in Paris , Lyon and Annecy . Was produced Eva Macassar Productions and Arte France Cinéma.

Eva received 1.3 out of 4 possible stars in the international reviews of the British trade magazine Screen International and thus took the last place of all 19 Berlinale competition films , while Wes Anderson's animated film Isle of Dogs - Atari's Journey (3.3) topped the list.
Awards
Benoît Jacquot is competing with Eva for the third time after 2012 and 2015 at the Berlin International Film Festival for the Golden Bear , the main prize of the festival.
