Eva Grebel

Eva Katharina Grebel (born 1966 in Dierdorf ) is a German astronomer . She is a professor at the Astronomical Computing Institute , one of the sub-institutes of the Center for Astronomy at Heidelberg University .

research

In her research, Grebel deals with the stars of our Milky Way and the other members of the local group of galaxies including the large and small magellanic clouds and the nearby dwarf galaxies . She uses the knowledge gained about chemical evolution and the structure of the galaxies, star formation and the properties of different star populations to draw conclusions about the evolution and history of the Milky Way and galaxies in general.

biography

Grebel completed her studies in physics and astronomy at the University of Bonn in 1991 with a diploma and spent part of the same year as a summer student at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore . From 1992 to 1994 she spent two years as a student fellow at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory from her subsequent PhD at the University of Bonn . In 1995 she completed her doctorate on "Stellar population studies in nearby galaxies" in Bonn.

After postdoctoral positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1995–1996), the University of Würzburg (1996–1997) and the University of California, Santa Cruz (1997–1998), Grebel went from 1998 to 2000 with a Hubble- Fellowship to the University of Washington in Seattle .

Following a position as research group leader ( C3 ) at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg from 2000, Grebel was appointed professor for observational astronomy at the Astronomical Institute of the University of Basel , which she also held from 2004 to 2007 Director.

In 2007 Grebel accepted an appointment as professor for astronomy at Heidelberg University , where she became director of the Astronomical Computing Institute at the Center for Astronomy at Heidelberg University. At that time, Grebel was the only full professor of astronomy in Germany.

Grebel's spokeswoman DFG - Collaborative Research Center 881 "The Milky Way" at the University of Heidelberg and President of the H1 "The Local Universe" of the International Astronomical Union .
