The Evangelical Church Altenwald is the parish church of the Evangelical Church Community Altenwald-Neuweiler in the Saarland Altenwald , a district of Sulzbach , Saarbrücken regional association . The parish belongs to the Saar-Ost parish of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

The population growth towards the end of the 19th century led to a lack of space in the Evangelical Church in Sulzbach , to which Protestants from Altenwald and Hühnerfeld also went to worship . Therefore in Altenwald and Hühnerfeld the desire for their own church and pastor arose . When sufficient funds were available, a prayer room was built in Altenwald between 1891 and 1893 according to plans by the architect Doffen, which was inaugurated on December 10, 1893. On April 1, 1894, the Evangelical parish of Altenwald was founded, which was also responsible for Hühnerfeld.

In 1894 the prayer room was expanded to include a choir . A church tower was added from 1896 to 1897, which later tilted due to damage in the mountains and was named the "Leaning Tower of Altenwald".

1961 came to a saddler under the direction of architect restoration of the church of 1987/88 a further restoration under the direction of architects Krüger & Rüger ( Saarbrücken followed).

Architecture and equipment

The church building was built in a neo-Romanesque style using brick . It is divided into a tower, nave and choir.

The church's equipment includes a. four windows in the chancel, which the painter Günther Swiderski (Saarbrücken) designed in 1988, as well as an altar cross from 1988 by the sculptor Harry Leid ( Heusweiler ).

The organ was put into service on Reformation Day 1987.
