The Protestant City Church Langen is a Protestant city church in Langen in Hesse .

Architecture and history

The neo-Gothic hall church made of red sandstone with the 54 m high tower dominates the cityscape on an elevation in the old local area of Langen. The town church was built in the years 1879-1883 according to plans of the grand ducal building councilor Johann Christian Horst. It replaced a church that was built in 1365 on the site of a previous building that was mentioned in 834 and consecrated to the Apostle James . This church, next to which was a fortified tower dating back to Romanesque origins and which existed until the 19th century , had to be closed and demolished in 1875 due to its dilapidation.

The current building is based, among other things, on the Elisabeth Church in Marburg , for example in the proportions of the church tower . The 39 m long and 14 m high nave is shaped like a Latin cross .

In 1962 the Oberlinger (Windesheim) organ building company built a new organ into the old case. The slider chest instrument has 33 registers (2392 pipes) on three manual works and a pedal. The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric.

The interior was redesigned in 1959, with a gallery built in and the windows replaced. During a later renovation in 1996/97, the original appearance was largely restored. In a side chapel there is a crucifix from around 1700. In 2016, four glass windows were installed in the transept of the church, designed by the Langen glass artist Johannes Schreiter and manufactured by the Derix Glasstudio in Taunusstein .

With the inauguration of the town church in 1883, Grand Duke Ludwig IV raised Langen to town .

The town church of Langen is a cultural monument because of its architectural and historical importance .
