Ewald Theodor Drathen (born March 22, 1901 in Aldegund ; † December 14, 1993 in Alf ) was a German wine wholesaler , winery owner and politician ( center , CDU ).

Life

In 1917, Drathen, whose ancestors came from the Netherlands via Linz on the Rhine to the Moselle, began training in his father's wine wholesaler after completing secondary school . After studying at the Cologne Commercial College , which he left as a business graduate , he joined his father's wine wholesaler in 1924; three years later, Drathen opened his own shop. In 1929 he married Beate Kemper (1910–1997); the couple had six children.

Between 1929 and 1969 Drathen was a member of Alf's municipal council . Until 1934, the center politician was a member of the district committee of the district of Zell . Not burdened by the Nazi era , he headed the founding assembly of the CDU in Zell in spring 1947, and remained chairman until around 1951. At the end of 1945 Drathen was elected first district deputy of the district, and in 1948 he was elected to the district council, to which he belonged for four years. Since November 1946 Drathen was a member of the CDP / CDU parliamentary group in the advisory state assembly of Rhineland-Palatinate , which worked out the state constitution until May 18, 1947 . After the state elections in May 1947 and April 1951 , the Moselaner was able to move into the state parliament in the first and second electoral periods , to which he belonged until May 1955.

In 1946 Drathen was chairman of the "Association of Wine Traders and Wine Commissioners in the Koblenz District", as well as chairman of the "Working Group of Wine Trade Associations" and chairman of the "Association of Wineries Mosel-Saar-Ruwer", of which he became honorary chairman in 1970. He was also an honorary member of the "Federal Association of the German Wine and Spirits Trade". Furthermore, he was a long-standing member of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry General Assembly and was deputy chairman of the parish council of the Alf community until his death .

In 1978 Ewald Drathen and his son Hans informed the State Chancellery of Rhineland-Palatinate under CDU Prime Minister Bernhard Vogel about wine fraud in the Moselle wine-growing region ; as “general suspicions” that damaged the reputation of the entire industry, further information letters to the viticulture and justice ministries were also lost in the following years. It was not until 1982 that the judiciary started investigations - supported by further accusations - which led to the trial of the vintners involved in February 1989.

In 1957 he was appointed Knight of the Papal Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Nicola Cardinal Canali and invested in Cologne on December 7, 1957 by Lorenz Jaeger , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . He belonged to the Trier Commandery. He was Commander of the Order.

He was married to Beate Kemper; the marriage resulted in five children.
