Winsum ( listen ? / I ) was a municipality in the Netherlands , province of Groningen . On September 30, 2018, it had a population of 13,557. Their total area was 102.53 km². On January 1, 2019, the parish merged with Bedum , De Marne and Eemsmond . The name of the new municipality is Het Hogeland . Only the villages of Ezinge, Feerwerd and Garnwerd changed to the new municipality of Westerkwartier . Audio file / audio sample

The most important are: Winsum-Obergum , which has almost 8,000 inhabitants and where the municipal administration is located, Ezinge , Sauwerd , Baflo and Wierum . history

The first official certification of April 24, 1057 when the German King Heinrich IV was granted market, coin and customs rights is today the official date of foundation of the municipality of Winsum. Archaeological excavations in the area of ​​Ezinge as part of a job creation project under the direction of Albert van Giffen at the beginning of the 1930s, however, resulted in settlement continuity between 500 BC. And 1500 AD. The Roman period imports were also among the finds .

The municipality of Winsum received its coat of arms from King Willem III on May 21, 1889 .

Location and economy

The municipality is located just a few kilometers north of the city of Groningen . Sauwerd, Winsum and Baflo have small stations on local railways.

Agriculture is the most important source of income. Tourism (water sports) is becoming more and more important.

Attractions

Most of the often very old villages have a core with a medieval church on a "wierde" ( terp ). These churches are often open for tours or for organ concerts in summer.

The Ezinge terp, which dates back to 300 BC. In the 1930s , archaeologists thoroughly investigated the area where the rectangular huts were made of branches and clay . Objects were discovered that had been imported from the Roman Empire (now in the Groninger Museum in the city of Groningen ). There is also a small museum in town.

The Sauwerd terp was also around 400 BC. Settled. The fortress builder Henrik Ruse , Baron von Rusenstein and his wife are buried in the church in Sauwerd .

Rinus Michels ( CDA ) was acting mayor of the municipality from November 18, 2008 until the municipality was dissolved . Between October 11, 2010 and July 16, 2011, Pieter van der Zaag (CDA) took over the post as deputy when Michels took a break due to health problems.
