The construction of Joinville Castle in 1027 by Étienne de Vaux marks the beginning of the rule. The lords of Joinville rose to become the leading nobility of Champagne in the high Middle Ages . Since Gottfried III. the office of Seneschal of Champagne is hereditary in the family. His great-grandson, Jean de Joinville, became known as the biographer of King Louis the Saint .

For François de Lorraine , Joinville was raised to the rank of principality by King Henry II in 1552 , with the title Prince de Joinville associated.
