The SIG 540 (also SG 540 ) is an assault rifle in caliber 5.56 × 45 mm NATO that was developed by SIG Holding . The rifle was not manufactured in large numbers at SIG. Contrary to what was originally planned, the weapon was not introduced into the Swiss Army . Instead, the SIG 550 was later chosen . However, the SIG 540 has been licensed for different countries.
technology
The rifle is a gas pressure loader that is guided indirectly via a gas linkage. It is possible to open or close a gas regulator. A rotating head lock is also used. In addition to safety, the trigger group also allows single shot and continuous fire . The muzzle is NATO standard and allows rifle grenades to be used (except SG 542). The diopter sight consists of a sight drum. The rifle also has an integrated bipod on the lower hand guard.
