The FC Aarau in 1902 was able to qualify for international competitions in the period from 1985 to 1997 several times. In total, the Aarauer contested 41 European Cup matches in their club's history. This resulted in 9 wins, 14 draws and 18 defeats and a goal difference of 47:65. This article is intended to chronologically document the past European Cup adventures of the club.

1985 : International Soccer Cup (IFC)

In the 1985/86 season, the Aarauer qualified for the first time for the International Football Cup, the predecessor of the UI Cup to bridge the summer break, but in Group 11 they took the last of four places.

1985/86 : European Cup Winners' Cup

In the same year, due to the cup win in 1985 (1-0 win against Xamax), the Aarau team were also able to take part in the "Cup winners' Cup".

1988 : International Soccer Cup (IFC)

Three years later, the Aarau team took part again in the International Football Cup (IFC) - again, one win and two draws in Group 2 were only enough for last place.

1988/89 : UEFA Cup

Third place in the championship of the 1987/88 season brought FC Aarau to the UEFA Cup for the first time.

1993 : International Soccer Cup (IFC)

In 1993, the Aarau dueled again with foreign opponents in the International Football Cup (IFC), which has now been played in groups of five (without return legs). The Aarau were able to secure second place.

1993/94 : European Champion Clubs' Cup

The third championship title in the club's history also gave FC Aarau its first participation in the national champions' cup .

1994/95 : UEFA Cup

1995 : UEFA Intertoto Cup

In the following season, the Aarauer managed to place themselves again in fourth place - but this was only enough to participate in the UI Cup.

The group victory, which became known only afterwards due to incorrectly published results in the daily press, brought a duel with Karlsruher SC in the round of 16. In front of 6700 spectators in the Aarau Brügglifeld, it was finally up to Adrian Knup , the Swiss man in the service of KSC, to destroy further Aarau European Cup dreams with his goal in extra time.

1996/97 : UEFA Cup

For the third time in a row, the Aarau team placed fourth in the national championship, which led to the club's last UEFA Cup participation so far . Noteworthy: In the home win over Lantana Tallinn, defender Mirko Pavlicevic scored the last Aarau European Cup goal to date with his 4-0. In the following seven matches, FC Aarau did not manage to score a single goal.

1997 : UEFA Intertoto Cup

In 1997, after a fifth place in the past season, the Aarau team embarked on the "European Cup trip" for the last time so far. A farewell to the UI Cup, understood by the fans as lackluster, resulted.
