Vehicles of the Salzkammergut local railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Salzkammergut-Lokalbahn (SKGLB) had a diverse fleet of vehicles, which is described in the following article.

After the opening of the sections between 1890 and 1893, the SKGLB had 10 steam locomotives , 39 passenger cars , four baggage cars , four mail cars , 58 freight cars and one saloon car . The vehicles were specially procured for the individual sections. Two "weaker" locomotives were procured for the 1st stage between Bad Ischl and Strobl , and five "stronger" locomotives were procured for the 3rd stage, as the line in this section had the character of a mountain railway. Since Bad Ischl was the emperor's summer residence , the Salzkammergut local railway procured a saloon car for his majesty.

In the course of the First World War , six locomotives had to be handed over to the army administration, which were used on army field railways built for the war . In the two world wars , the vehicles were subjected to extreme stress and often had to be parked for a long time due to a lack of spare parts. After the Second World War , the local railway received from the occupation forces confiscated rolling stock (partly former army field railway locomotives); the only diesel locomotive in the history of the SKGLB came into the possession of the railway. In 1930 the SKGLB introduced a new numbering scheme. In 1933, diesel multiple units were purchased in order to be able to remain competitive with car traffic - but this attempt failed.

After the railway was closed, all remaining vehicles were sold at scrap value . Many vehicles came to the Styrian state railways and the Zillertalbahn ; there were no interested parties for other vehicles, which is why they were scrapped. Many vehicles have survived to this day - they are listed in a separate section in this article.

This eventful vehicle history, which was influenced by the factors listed in the main article , is reflected in detail in the following tables.

Numbering scheme from 1930

Three-digit numbers were provided for motor coaches, passenger coaches, luggage and mail coaches. Cars without heater received end numbers below 50, those with a heater end numbers over 50. vehicles without abortion were given odd numbers, however, those with even numbers.

Locomotives and railcars

The locomotives kept their numbers as in the table above . The only railcar so far has been renumbered, and three new ones have been added:

The three converted former railcars 452, 454, 456 (71 or 72 seats) came partly to the Murtalbahn and were last used on the Stainzerbahn , when after the Second World War it was still used for passenger services until 1951. They then stood in Stainz train station and were scrapped around 1961.

The type B passenger cars were 2nd class cars, those of the C type were 3rd class cars. The carriages BC 351-365 were wagons with 2nd and 3rd class seats.

The type G wagons were covered freight wagons that were mainly used for the transport of milk and general cargo . During maintenance work , they were also used to transport materials. Some of these boxcars could also be used as baggage cars. Wagons with the generic sign K were open , high-sided freight wagons that were used to transport coal. The wagons of the types N, J, P and S were responsible for transporting wood. These wagons had fixed or removable stanchions . The type N low side cars were also used to transport materials. The Ra 1 and R 2 cars were two special cars: They were the only two tank cars on the Salzkammergut Local Railway and were simply numbered 1 and 2, as the numbering scheme for tank cars did not contain any numbers. Both wagons were self-made by the workshop in Itzling. In the case of the R 1 car, an oil tank was installed on a former army field railway car. The car R 2 was a conversion of the freight car Pwr 2304, which received a third axle and a boiler.
