Fawzi Boubia (born December 8, 1948 in Khémisset , Morocco ) is a Moroccan humanities scholar and German-speaking writer. As a professor of German literary and cultural history, he teaches at the University of Caen . He sees himself as a citizen of the Orient and Occident and, as a comparative and cultural scientist, advocates a culture of dialogue in the Mediterranean region.

Fawzi Boubia was born as the second son of the resistance fighter and historian Si Ahmed Boubia . After attending the Koran school and the Arab elementary school, he switched to the French school system. He then attended the French grammar schools in Meknes (lycée Paul-Valéry) and Rabat (lycée Descartes), where he passed the Abitur with a focus on philosophy and literature. Then he went to study in Germany.

After completing a master's degree in literary and political science and philosophy, Boubia received the title of "Doctor of Philosophy" from the University of Heidelberg and a few years later obtained his habilitation at the Sorbonne .

Boubia is a Germanist, philosopher, writer and historian with a focus on the relationship between Orient and Occident. He writes his publications primarily in German, but also in French and Arabic. For many years he was head of the then newly founded German department (1976) at the University of Rabat and professor of German literary and cultural history. He also taught at German universities (Heidelberg and Karlsruhe). Together with Professor Arnold Rothe and other colleagues, he initiated the Maghreb studies at Heidelberg University in the early 1980s . He was often invited to lectures and readings in many countries. Since 1997 he has been a professor at the University of Caen in Normandy . There he founded and headed the research group “Voi (es) x de l'exil et des migrations” for many years.

Boubia has written numerous books and articles. As a teenager he had already written an Arabic textbook for Francophone students. His first scientific publication deals with the dialectic of literature and politics in the theater of the late Enlightenment ( Sturm und Drang ). He is also the author of Heidelberg-Marrakech, simply (1996), the first Moroccan novel in the German language (written in Morocco). On the occasion of his invitation the following year to the Rauris Literature Days, he recited and published his first German-language poem Scheherezade in a poor time .

As a theater poet, he wrote a dramatic version of his novel “Heidelberg-Marrakech, Simply”, which Massud Rahnama successfully staged at the Vienna “Theater Spielraum” and at 80 different venues in Austria and around the world.

He has also published a comprehensive study entitled La pensée de l'universel: Goethe contre Hegel . In it he deals with the integrative universalism of Goethe , which he confronts with the philosophy of Hegel .

His scientific work revolves around various topics and problems: exile and migration ; Theory of alterity and world literature in Goethe; Hegel's philosophy of exclusion ; Rousseau's philosophy of negativity; Intercultural communication ; Orientalism and occidentalism ; the Arab Spring as the third “ Nahda ” ( Renaissance ); to Islam as an integral part of European culture and history.

In an article that he wrote in Arabic on the occasion of the Arab Spring, he introduced a new Arabic concept into the discussion, the “irhalocratie” الإرحلوقراطية (executive dismissal due to free elections), which is designed to follow up on the political Philosophy of Critical Rationalism to replace the vague term " democracy ", which has been overused by the oriental potentates .

Committee activities

Boubia was a founding member and board member of the Society for Intercultural German Studies (GiG) in the 1980s and 1990s. In the 1980s he was on the scientific committee of the Euro-Arab University and on the scientific committee of the "Transcultura" institute. He was in the advisory commission of UNESCO for the creation of the “Plan Arabia” (project: promoting the Euro-Arab dialogue, 1990s) and founding director of the research group “Voi (es) x de l'exil et des migrations” at the University of Caen (1998-2005).
