Life

Aspremont-Lynden Castle

Ferdinand Gobert was born in 1645 in Aspremont-Lynden Castle in Reckheim in the province of Limburg . His parents were Count Ferdinand von Lynden (1611 / 15–1665) and Countess Elisabeth (1621–1662), b. Countess von Fürstenberg-Heiligenberg . He embarked on a military career and commanded a regiment of cuirassiers in the service of the Electorate of Bavaria . On March 16, 1676, Emperor Leopold I granted all members of the Aspremont-Lynden family the right to bear the title of Count.

Ferdinand Gobert married Princess Elisabeth Charlotte von Nassau-Dillenburg (* June 2, 1643, † March 2, 1686) the daughter of Georg Ludwig Prince of Nassau-Dillenburg (* 1618, † 1656) and his wife Anna Augusta von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel in 1679 (* 1612, † 1673). In 1683 he took part in the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna . In 1686 Ferdinand Gobert was involved in the conquest of Buda under the leadership of Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria . In 1690 he did not succeed in defending besieged Belgrade against the attack of the Ottoman army under Grand Vizier Köprülü Fazıl Mustafa Pascha . When half of the defenders were killed, he fled to the other side of the Danube with Duke Charles Eugène de Croÿ and the rest of their troops .

After the fall of Belgrade he was ordered to Vienna and was there under "open arrest". In 1691 Princess Julia Barbara Rákóczi (* September 1672, † May 26, 1717) was imprisoned in a monastery in Vienna. She was the daughter of Jelena Zrinski and Franz I. Rákóczi , the prince of Transylvania and the stepdaughter of Emmerich Thököly , the daughter and stepdaughter of enemies of Austria. Ferdinand Gobert obtained a duplicate key and secretly met the rich princess. Bishop Ernst von Trautson (1633–1702) caught the two of them, but did not intervene. On the same night Ferdinand Gobert kidnapped the princess and, much to the annoyance of Leopold I, married her.

For his achievements in the Great Turkish War , Emperor Leopold I appointed him general in 1697 and soon afterwards field marshal. Ferdinand Gobert was Count von Reckheim and received the county of Apremont in Lorraine from another branch of the family . By marrying Julia Barbara Rákóczi he received possessions in Hungary .

From his marriage to Elisabeth Charlotte von Nassau-Dillenburg, Ferdinand Gobert had a daughter who became a canon in the Imperial Abbey of Munsterbilzen .

From his second marriage to Julianna Barbara Rákóczi, he had seven children. However, details are only known about his two sons:

  • Joseph Gobert von Aspremont-Lynden (* February 2, 1694, † March 4, 1720) ∞ Charlotte Turinetti (* / †?)
  • Karl Gobert Franz von Aspremont-Lynden (* November 21, 1703, † November 24, 1749)

The younger son Karl Gobert Franz von Aspremont-Lynden married Elisabeth Eleonore Kokorzowa (* 1703, † 1747). The marriage resulted in a daughter, Marie Anne Elisabeth von Aspremont-Lynden (* May 25, 1727, †?) And the son Johann Nepomuk (* August 22, 1732, † April 16, 1805).

Ferdinand Gobert's two sons followed him as Count of Reckheim .
