Ferdinand Meyer (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ferdinand Meyer , called Ferdinand Meyer-Wismar (born January 14, 1833 in Wismar , † March 26, 1917 in Schwerin ), was a German genre and portrait painter.

Life

Ferdinand Meyer received his first lessons from the Schwerin court painter Gaston Lenthe . He then attended the Dresden Art Academy and then moved to Munich to work with the genre painter Karl von Enhuber . He spent the years 1858 to 1861 in the United States , including New York and Mobile (Alabama) . Back in Germany, he settled again in Munich, where he worked until 1887. This is where genre motifs originated from the Bavarian highlands. From 1887 until his death he was back in his Mecklenburg homeland in Schwerin. From around 1884 he signed his works with Meyer-Wismar. Meyer was represented with his works several times at the exhibitions of the Royal Academy of the Arts in Berlin, as well as at the world exhibitions in Paris in 1867 , Vienna in 1873 and the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. The State Museum Schwerin owns 15 of his works.

“His painterly work is shaped by Munich art. He prefers folk scenes with a strong relationship to representationalism and portraits. The pictures are executed with fine brushwork, warm colors and accuracy. Whether humorous or partly sentimental, he always strives to reproduce the life of the simple strata of the population. "
