Fernando Báez (Author)

Fernando Báez (born January 1, 1947 in San Félix de Guayana , Venezuela ) is a Venezuelan library scholar , writer , translator and political activist. His foundational book “Historia universal de la destrucción de los libros” (Universal History of Book Destruction), published in 2004, has been translated into numerous languages.

He became internationally known for his reports on the destruction of the National Library of Baghdad in the Iraq war .

Life

In 1996 he obtained a BA in Education with the grade summa cum laude. Then from 1999 he studied library science. His mentors included the Latin American philosopher José Manuel Briceño Guerrero, the educationalist Pedro Rincon Gutierrez and the American classical philologist Miroslav Marcovich . He completed his academic training in 2002 with his doctoral thesis on the subject of Historia universal de la destrucción de los libros (Universal History of Book Destruction). He then expanded this doctoral thesis into his book of the same name. In 2003 he received the "Vintila Horia" Prize for Essays for his study of the history of the Alexandria Library . Báez taught students in Venezuela , there in Caracas , Zulia and Merida ; in Guadalajara in Mexico , in Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil ), in Colombia , there in Bogotá , Medellín and Bucaramanga , in Bolivia , there in La Paz and Santa Cruz de la Sierra , in Spain (in Madrid , Barcelona , Castile , Seville and Valencia ), in France in Paris and Lyon , in Cairo ( Egypt ), in Amman in Jordan , in Aleppo ( Syria ), in Sydney ( Australia ) and in London and Cambridge in Great Britain .
