Fernando Charrier

Fernando Charrier (born September 12, 1931 in Bourcet near Roure , Val Chisone , Province of Turin , † October 7, 2011 in Alessandria , Piedmont ) was an Italian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of the diocese of Alessandria . Pope John Paul II called him the preacher of the social gospel .

Life

Fernando Charrier studied at the seminary in Pinerolo and was ordained a priest on June 24, 1956 . He was first secretary to Bishop Gaudenzio Binaschi and then pastor in Mentoulles. He studied canon law at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome . In 1968 Bishop Santo Bartolomeo Quadri made him head of the Office for Social Problems and Work in the Diocese of Pinerolo . After a commitment to the ACLI (Associazioni Cristiane dei Lavoratori Italiani) he became secretary of the working group for pastoral care and work in the Italian Bishops 'Conference (CEI) in 1971 , from which the National Bureau of the Italian Bishops' Conference for Pastoral and Social Work emerged in 1975. Scharrier then took on the role of secretary of the Italian Commission for Justice and Peace .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Cercina on September 29, 1984 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in Siena, Montalcino and Colle di Val d'Elsa . The Archbishop of Turin , Cardinal Anastasio Alberto Ballestrero OCD , donated him episcopal ordination on November 11, 1984 ; Co- consecrators were Pietro Giachetti , Bishop of Pinerolo , and Ismaele Mario Castellano OP , Archbishop of Siena and Bishop of Colle di Val d'Elsa and Montalcino. After the union of the dioceses of Montalcino and Colle di Val d'Elsa with the Archdiocese of Siena, he became auxiliary bishop of the new Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino on September 30, 1986. He was secretary of the Evangelizzazione e promozione umana e Riconciliazione cristiana e comunità degli uomini . In 1985 he was elected President of the Episcopal Commission for Social Problems and Labor at the General Assembly of the CEI. In 1989 he was elected President of the Comitato Scientifico-Organizzatore delle Settimane Sociali dei Cattolici Italiani .

On April 22nd, 1989 Fernando Charrier was appointed Bishop of Alessandria by Pope John Paul II . He was a member of the CEI Legal Commission from 1989 to 1996 and 2007. In May 1990 he became President-Secretary of the Episcopal Commission on Social Problems and Labor. As President of the Foundation for Justice and Solidarity (Fondazione Giustizia e Solidarietà), he carried out a successful campaign against the external debt of the CEI. On the occasion of the Jubilee Year 2000, Charrier is coordinating groups of three preparatory meetings for workers with the Pope: the craftsman's anniversary on March 19th, the workers 'anniversary on May 1st and the farmers' anniversary on November 12th. In May 2000 he was appointed a member of the Episcopal Commission for Culture and Communication. He was also the longstanding Vice-President of the Bishops' Conference of Piedmont. He was a church advisor to the Coopération Internationale pour le Développement et la Solidarité (CIDSE), a Catholic agency for international cooperation for development and solidarity in Brussels.
