Giovanni Filippo Gallarati Scotti

Giovanni Filippo Gallarati Scotti (born February 25, 1747 in Milan , † October 6, 1819 near Orvieto ; also called Giovanni Filippo Scotti Gallarati , Giovanni Filippo Gallerati Scotti or Filippo Scotti ) was an Italian papal diplomat, bishop and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

The son of Giovanni Battista Gallarati Scotti and Maria Teresa Spinola came from one of the most prominent families of the Milanese patrician population and was destined for a spiritual career at an early age. He attended the University of Pavia and the Collegio di Milano . In 1773 he obtained a doctorate in law .

On February 6, 1769, Gallarati Scotti was trainee lawyer at the Apostolic Signature . From February 17, 1770 to April 1776 he worked as a vice- legate in Romagna , and in 1785 he is an inquisitor in Malta . He was ordained a priest on August 12, 1792.

On September 24, 1792, he was appointed titular archbishop of Side , and was ordained episcopal on March 17, 1793 in the Roman church of San Carlo al Corso by Cardinal Luigi Valenti Gonzaga , assisted by Bishops Carlo Crivelli , Prefect of the Vatican Archives , and Antonio Felice Zondadari , Nuncio in Belgium. Gallarati Scotti was nuncio in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany from August 23, 1793 to October 3, 1795 and nuncio in Venice from August 18, 1795 to 1797 .

In the consistory of February 23, 1801 , Pope Pius VII created him cardinal priest , he was assigned the titular church of Sant'Alessio . From 1805 to 1806 he was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals . Since he refused to attend the wedding of Napoleon Bonaparte to Marie-Louise of Austria , he was exiled first to Sedan , later to Charleville and finally to Toulon .

After the fall of Napoleon, he moved to the titular church of Santa Prassede on September 26, 1814 . On December 21, 1818 he opted for the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina and became cardinal proto-priest in the same year .

Giovanni Filippo Gallarati Scotti died on October 6, 1819 in the Gaultieri family's country house near Orvieto. He was laid out in the local cathedral, later transferred to Rome and buried in the church of Santi Ambrogio e Carlo al Corso .
