Hands off! (Original title Too Hot to Handle , in German about too hot to handle it ) is a reality show by the US video-on-demand provider Netflix that has been broadcast since 2020.

concept

Ten singles, half male and half female, will be quartered for four weeks in a luxurious villa, which opened in 2018, on the Punta Mita peninsula, northwest of the Mexican city of Puerto Vallarta, on the Pacific Ocean . In addition to room and board, the participants were advised of a prize money of 100,000 US dollars for the entire group. The group's smartphones are taken away and there is no communication with the outside world. Communication between the production team and participants takes place via a device reminiscent of a smart speaker , which the producers dubbed “Lana”. The villa has only one bedroom with eight beds, so some participants have to share a bed. The US comedian Desiree Burch will comment on the events in the villa for the audience .

Twelve hours after arrival, attendees will be informed that sexual acts such as kissing, masturbation, or intercourse will result in a reduction in the prize money - French kissing is $ 3,000, oral intercourse is $ 6,000, and intercourse is $ 20,000. Further penalties are applied at the discretion of the producers and are not communicated in detail. All areas of the villa are monitored by cameras. Only the group dinner, which was prepared by a specially employed cook, was not monitored. As a job offer, the participants should take part in individual so-called "workshops" over the four weeks, which usually deal with self-awareness. In the third and sixth episodes, four more singles were brought to the villa, so that the total cast increased to 14 people.

Halfway through the episodes, the participants get prepared bracelets that they have to put on. These light up on two participants if the creators of the show believe that a serious, deeper relationship could develop between the two. The contact restrictions no longer apply to two participants whose armbands light up at the same time. These participants are assigned a private suite , in which the contact restrictions apply again at night. Last night, the two people who cost the team the most money through their actions have to spend the night together in the private suite. If they manage to spend the night without physical contact, the money deducted from the two previously deducted will be added to the total prize money. Participants who, in the opinion of the producers, do not form a deeper bond with another participant in the course of the season will be prematurely thrown out of the show shortly before the end of the season. At the end, the remaining prize money will be divided evenly among the remaining participants.

production

The concept for the show was developed from 2016 by Laura Gibson and Charlie Bennett from the British TV production company Talkback , which is part of the Fremantle media group. Gibson and Bennett named a 1992 episode of the US sitcom Seinfeld as inspiration. In the multi-award-winning episode The Competition , the four main characters in the series hold a competition to see who can do without masturbation the longest. As a further inspiration, Gibson names the dating culture in the age of Tinder, which she sees as "brutal" .

During the casting process, applicants were only informed that they would be attending a dating show. The core element of the show, the renouncement of sexual activity, was not communicated to the participants until the first episode, according to the production company. Since Netflix has an international focus as a buyer of the show, the production company decided to cast the participants "globally", which only extends to Australia, Great Britain, Ireland and Canada. Filming for the first season of Too Hot to Handle took place in the spring of 2019 and lasted about four weeks. The show didn't have a title at the time; As recently as May 2019, Netflix submitted a trademark protection application for the title Too Hot to Handle . According to the production company, the fact that the show was produced for a streaming provider offered expanded options for editing, as reality TV shows for TV broadcasters usually have a daily broadcast format and must be produced accordingly quickly.

A trailer for the series was released on April 1, 2020, and was released a week later.

reception

For the week following its release, Too Hot to Handle was the most watched show on Netflix.

The Rotten Tomatoes review database aggregates 19 review ratings to an average rating of 42%. In numerous reviews, clear parallels to the British dating show Love Island have been found. The women's magazine Cosmopolitan found the series "pretty awesome"; it is "the stuff that reality TV dreams are made of". The US entertainment magazine Entertainment Weekly found that Netflix touted the series as an aid to the participants to create "deeper emotional bonds in their personal relationships." In fact, the series presents singles “full of unresolved problems and filled with narcissism ”, who have “the depth of a footbath” and nothing comes about that is remotely reminiscent of serious human relationships. The magazine assessed that the reputation of the series was like a "listless, criminally boring drudgery". The British news magazine for young people found that the series deals with toxic masculinity in an unfamiliar way . As in comparable series like Love Island, “(the male participants) are dripping with sexual frustration”, are unencumbered by their potential external impact and have “an obscene level of self-confidence”. In contrast to Love Island , the male participants in Too Hot to Handle could not fight turf wars and act out promiscuity , but would have to deal with their female counterparts and their needs in order to be successful on the show. The US magazine Vanity Fair saw a content-rich series that was more passionate than the Love Island model , but also contained elements of the US offshoot of the Dutch TV show Big Brother due to the constant monitoring . In the philosophical concept of the series, Vanity Fair saw very clear borrowings from the Netflix series Love Is Blind, which also started in 2020 .
