Firestarter is a song by the English big beat band The Prodigy .

It was released on March 18, 1996 as the first single release of the album The Fat of the Land . Overall, this was the eleventh single in the band's history. The song was The Prodigy's first major international success and featured Keith Flint for the first time as the band's punk frontman.

background

The track uses samples from SOS from the American indie rock band The Breeders and Close (to the Edit) from The Art of Noise .

The black and white video was produced by Walter Stern and recorded in the abandoned Aldwych underground station . In England, it was banned from the BBC's programming after the violent text was criticized ("Firestarter" means "arsonist") and when viewers of Top of the Pops complained that Keith Flint's contortions were theirs in his provocative punk outfit Terrified children.

An instrumental version of the piece is part of the soundtrack for the video game " WipEout 2097 ".

In Great Britain the song reached number 1 in the charts, in Germany number 6.

Cover versions

The American rock band Jimmy Eat World covered the title in 2001 as an acoustic ballad. This version was initially released together with the also covered Wham! -Title Last Christmas released on a 3,000-piece limited vinyl single and later used on charity album 1 Love . In 2004 the band released an EP with Firestarter as the theme song. Frontman Jim Adkins said: "I don't like the original very much, but the challenge of reinterpreting a song from a completely different genre." In 2004, Gene Simmons covered the song and released it on the album Asshole . In 2011 Sepultura covered the song and it appeared on the deluxe version of Kairos . Also, The Zimmers coverten the song Firestarter in 2008. The Dutch alternative rock band De Staat coverte Firestarter 2012. This version was in the trailer of the video game 2015 Just Cause 3 to hear.
