Fish rolls
A fish sandwich is a filled bread roll with fish or seafood . Fish rolls are sold at food stalls and in fast food restaurants; often they are also part of the offer of fish shops.

Bismarck herring , matjes , fried herring , rollmops , sprats , salmon or salmon schnitzel , mackerel and other types of fish are used for the topping of a fish sandwich , including North Sea crab meat (from North Sea prawns ), “shrimps”, “ arctic sea shrimp” or “greenland shrimp ”. Also fishcakes or fish fingers are used; the variant with fish cakes is also known as a fish burger , based on Hamburger, also known as Bremer .
Typical ingredients are onions and pickles as well as tartar sauce for fried or deep-fried fish . Other ingredients such as lettuce leaves can be added.
semantics
Basically, the term “fish roll” means a roll topped with all fish-like toppings. However, semantic and grammatical rules are not taken into account, since the prefix of the word "fish" implies a certain type of fish used. Accordingly, the term can at best be classified as colloquial .
Others
In its early days, the Hanover Fair was popularly referred to as the "Fish Roll Fair" because the fish served there on rolls were a particularly striking feature of the fair for visitors from outside the city.
Since 2011 , the " World Fish Bread Day " has been celebrated on the Baltic coast in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on the first Saturday in May .
